Millicent Fox Mailliard (Age 93)
Millicent Fox Mailliard, a resident of Fox Hill in Bethesda, Maryland passed away at the age of 93 on May 2, 2022, from natural causes.
Known to all as Millie, she was the eldest daughter of Edward J. Fox, Jr. and Lucy Buck Fox, and was born January 16, 1929 in Easton, PA. She attended the Ethel Walker School and Wells College. After college, she lived in New York City, working for Merrill Lynch until she moved to Washington, DC in the early 1950s. Millie worked for California Congressman, John Allen, who introduced her to his good friend, Junior Congressman from San Francisco, William S. Mailliard. Bill and Millie married in 1957, and raised three daughters, Julia, Josephine and Leigh.
Millie was devoted to her three daughters, her four step-children, Bill Jr., Antoinette, Ward and Kristina and her five grandchildren. Millie, a matriarch, kept her geographically dispersed family united by hosting exciting adventures all over the world. Part of her lasting legacy are the close bonds forged during those trips between her children, their siblings and her grandchildren. Her trips also sparked a passion for travel in all.
As the wife of a Congressman and Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Millie loved to entertain and travel and did so extensively with her husband. She also enjoyed gardening, especially at her lovely mountaintop home in Bluemont, VA.
Millie was a dedicated volunteer for several organizations including the Junior League of Washington, The Washington Home, The Smithsonian Women's Committee, The Sulgrave Club, The Evergreen Garden Club, and the Washington Antiques Group.
Millie is survived by her three daughters Julia Mailliard Nelson, Josephine Mailliard Fleming (Steve), Leigh Mailliard Walker (Brian); and her step-children, Ward Mailliard (Kranti), Antoinette Mailliard and Janie Mailliard, wife of the late Bill Mailliard, Jr.; and Millie's five grandchildren Steven (Ally), Jennifer, Alexis, William and Andrew. Millie is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Elicker and brother-in-law Ed Reed as well as many nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Joy Reed and her two step-children, Bill Mailliard and Kristina Mailliard.
The family is deeply grateful to her caregivers for the exceptional love and care they provided, especially during the last years of her life. The family would also like to acknowledge the wonderful support provided by the staff at Fox Hill.
