MURRAY SCUREMAN Obituary

SCUREMAN MURRAY SMITH SCUREMAN, JR. December 4, 1938 ~ August 18, 2017 Murray Scureman, age 78, died suddenly on August 18, 2017 at home in Potomac, Maryland. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, he was the only son of Catharine and Murray Smith Scureman, Sr. He followed in his father's footsteps to school at Wyoming Seminary and to college at Princeton University, where he was on the wrestling team and a member of Quadrangle Club. He served two years in the United States Army, Artillery. After graduation from Princeton in 1963 with a B.S.E. in electrical engineering, Murray began his career as a systems engineer with IBM. He obtained his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1970 and moved to California to work for Singer Business Machines, where he sold the first point-of-sale computer system to Sears, Roebuck and Co. Murray served in two presidential administrations, under Nixon and Ford. He returned east in 1973 to serve as Executive Assistant to then Secretary of Commerce Frederick Dent. In 1976, Murray was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Domestic Commerce. After leaving the government, he joined computer company, Amdahl Corp. of Sunnyvale, California and was named Vice President of Federal operations in 1982. Always an engineer at heart, Murray began remodeling his home in his spare time and during the 1990's he decided to pivot his career. He left his job as a lobbyist and began a new full time career as a home remodeling contractor. He founded Denman Development Corp. in 1998 and retired from the home remodeling business in 2017. Murray's avocation was the game of tennis. For decades, he was a near-daily player on the courts at Congressional Country Club, where he was a member. In recent years, he served the Club tennis committee as the volunteer liaison during construction of the new tennis house, completed only a few weeks prior to his death. On the courts and off, he was known as a gentleman and intellectual. He will be remembered for his tireless work on behalf of the club members, his affable and garrulous nature, as well as for his precision of language and adherence to rules. His marriage to Sarah Sampson ended in divorce. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Colleen Scureman Kepner; two grandchildren and many friends. His family, friends and the members of Congressional Country Club will always hold in honor the name of Murray Smith Scureman. The memorial service will be held Saturday, September 16 at 3 p.m. at Concord - St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 5910 Goldsboro Road, Bethesda, MD 20817.The memorial service will be held Saturday, September 16 at 3 p.m. at Concord - St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 5910 Goldsboro Road, Bethesda, MD 20817.

Murray was a friend to Bill and I. He had visited our home several times over the years and we had many meals together at the club. He was always a gentleman and we enjoyed talking to him about so many things. He will be missed.
