Murray Stein Obituary

Stein

Murray R. Stein

Murray R. Stein passed away in his home in Potomac, Maryland with his wife by his side in the early morning of April 12, 2023, at the age of 91. He earned a juris doctorate degree and several awards in International Law as Extradition Attorney of distinction for forty years in the United States Justice Department. As the attorney of record in the extradition of Nazi war criminals, he returned Klaus Barbie, Artukovic, Hermine Braunsteiner, Ivan Demjanjuk among others working with Simon Weisenthal and the Klarsfelds, Serge and Beate. Murray argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. His colleagues called him Mr. Extradition. He was a multitasker who valued promptness. The law and courtroom were his passions. Reading voraciously was his hobby.

Murray graduated from George Washington University Law School simultaneously teaching advanced courses in mathematics. He then served in the U.S. Armed Forces. He was an engaged member of the Consular Corps. Murray and his wife were active members for over fifty years at the Washington Hebrew Congregation. He delighted in studying Judaism, Comparative Religion, History, music, and sports. The couple were lifelong learners for decades at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Johns Hopkins.

In addition to his beloved wife Barbara Baylus Stein, Ph.D., Murray is survived by four daughters and their spouses: Elisa Stein Lata, M.D. and Adrian L. Lata, M.D.; Julie Stein Bender Maeir, J.D. (David); Cheryl Stein Cloh (Steven, J.D.); and Rona Stein Israelson (Scott, M.B.A.); nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and his sister-in-law, Marilyn Ayares Sopka, resides in Florida. The son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Broker Stein, Murray was also preceded in death by his brother, Harold Stein.

After a long brave struggle with multiple illnesses, Murray's courage and determination failed. He closed his eyes for the last time at daybreak.

Burial will take place in the family plot at Beth Tfiloh Cemetery, near Pikesville, MD, under supervision of Sol Levinson & Bros. Funeral Home. Shiva will be observed at the home of Barbara and Murray Stein on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

As a young federal narcotic agent in NYC a half century ago, I got to know Murray Stein by phone as we worked together to extradite defendants in what became known as French Connection drug cases. Murray would always take my calls, even though I was miles below him in the pecking order of government workers. Murray had a fine sense of the law and helped me to understand the process. He epitomized the best of our Justice Department lawyers. Murray Stein was a good and decent man, an excellent lawyer, and a fine American. As we near the second anniversary of his passing, let us remember this good man. May he rest in peace. My condolences to his friends and family.

Our condolences go out Barbara and her lovely family.
Diane and I first me Barbara and Murray at Osher.
It was a joy to interface with them and enjoyed the conversations for many years.
When Murray could not drive I would pick him at class monthly and drive to Bethesda where we participated in a book club we both enjoyed. Murray always had words of wisdom.
He will be missed.
