Micky was my first cousin. I didn't know her as well as the older cousins did, but we exchanged emails from time to time and I have to admit to being delighted that we were always on the same wavelength. I'm now deeply regretting not having kept in touch more often. It would have been up to me to do it, too, as Micky was so busy -- teaching, consulting, writing, taking care of K, looking after her mother (the amazing Deana Shulman), helping her daughters, looking after grandchildren, running two homes.

Actually, I can't imagine how she did it all. I stood in awe of the seemingly effortless way in which she handled all those major commitments. We weren't close in my childhood because of the age difference (not significant now, but important in the early years), then I moved to Canada and we lost track of each other. It wasn't until 20 years ago that we sort of reunited. The occasion was me visiting Washington to see her father (my uncle) Herbert Shulman in what was to be the last year of his life. I stayed with Micky and K and they were the most magnificent hosts -- Micky especially, taking me into DC to the Holocaust Museum, which we visited together, and touring around the capital region. All this, in spite of her busy work schedule.

In thinking about Micky, I can't imagine a more inspiring role model for her daughters and grandchildren. Though her death was untimely and she should have been around for at least another 20 years (like her mother), I am thankful that, when the end came, she did not suffer.

May her memory be a blessing to us all and a reminder of how much power each of us has to make a difference in the lives of others. Micky, in particular, used her immense teaching skills to help newcomers integrate into American society. And I'm thinking how essential those skills are, now more than ever, as we face the challenge of welcoming thousands of refugees and helping them build a new life -- as our own people were once welcomed and helped.
