I only had the privilege of meeting Dr. Winkler at our daughter's wedding. I was immensely impressed by his towering intellect, good humor and his deep compassion. He will be sorely missed.

Dr. Winkler was a campus icon during my years as an undergrad at Georgetown (1972-1976). I often saw him commuting on his bicycle. I was in the College, but my roommate was in SBA and took one of his courses (Statistics?) and loved him. Years later, my cousin's husband's sister Lauren married his son Tom, so in a sense we became related.
