PAUL ROBERTSON Obituary

ROBERTSON Paul James Robertson Our dear friend, son, and husband, Paul Robertson began his next great adventure January 25, 2019, at the age of 57. After a well-fought battle with brain cancer, he joined his late father, James Robertson, in our loving memories. His husband, Brian Kim, and mother, Barbara Capece Robertson will host a celebration of his life on February 16. No funeral services will be held. Paul was born in Queens in New York City, and grew up in Willingboro, NJ, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, and Centerville, OH, before attending Miami University (OH). After college, he moved to Washington DC with his "brother from another mother" David Spangler and friend Neal Glatte. His life-long passions for political debate and the Washington Redskins are an expression of his fierce devotion to DC. He spent his entire adult life in the Dupont Circle, 14th and U Street Corridors, and Logan Circle neighborhoods, and participated in their rebuilding. When not enjoying the gay social life of the City, he would enjoy his summer weekends in Rehoboth Beach, DE, where he had begun building a summer home with his brother David to enjoy with his husband and many friends. He founded the Robertson Development Corporation and built and renovated residential properties in the District. He was proud of his developments and the construction teams who worked with him to ensure attention to good design and quality craftsmanship. His favorite projects included the Beauregard at 11th and V Streets, NW, and Woodson Row at 12th and T Streets, NW, among many others that mark his contributions to DC. In 1987, he was elected by his fellow founding members of Delta Lambda Phi to be the president of the Alpha Chapter's Alpha Class and led the organization for its first two years. DLP was the first social fraternity for gay, bisexual, and transgender men. Today DLP is a national fraternal organization with 30 active chapters at universities across the country. When Paul and his husband Brian Kim met nine years ago they were both busy and successful businessmen. Yet they found the spark that made for a tender and caring relationship and the entrepreneurial spirit to begin two new franchise businesses together. Their continued professional success is evident in the support and good will provided by their teams that have allowed Brian to devote himself 100% to Paul's care over the past seven months. Paul is survived by his husband, Brian Kim and his mother, Barbara Capece Robertson, both in Washington DC. He also leaves two half brothers, Bill and Bruce, their wives, and many nieces and nephews. A third half brother, Jimmy preceded him. Over his lifetime he created his own family that included the many friends and loved ones who rallied around him over the past two years during his illness. Anyone wishing to remember Paul through a donation may contribute to either the American Cancer Society or the Paul J. Robertson Fund, held by the Delphi Foundation of Delta Lambda Phi, an international social fraternity with a mission to enhance the quality of life for all men, irrespective of sexual orientation.

I share the sadness at the loss of Paul. Through our too short' years of a business relationship, Paul has become, most importantly, a good friend... I will always remember him with much warmth. I will celebrate his fearless outlook and good humor, his foresight, attention to detail and professionalism. Paul will be greatly missed.

Paul was truly a brave and remarkable individual who I enjoyed working with over the last 5 years. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends, especially Brian and Barbara.

My deepest condolences at your lost. I thought a great deal of Paul, and admired the pride he took in his work improving the Shaw/U Street neighborhood.
