PETER FIVEL

PETER FIVEL (Age 44)  
Died suddenly on September 12, 2014 at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Peter and his brother, Jeremiah, spent their early years in Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C. surrounded by a close community of friends and neighbours. Peter attended Capitol Hill Day School before continuing his education at Georgetown Day School; St Mary's College of Maryland; and Boston University. He majored in psychology with a keen interest in neuroscience.  While an undergraduate he received a summer internship at one of Harvard University's medical research centers and was soon offered a full-time staff position. This began a long passionate life of neurological research. Refusing offers elsewhere, Peter spent his entire career at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA. He served in different capacities; in study development, execution, supervision and data management. While there, he received an award for excellence; designed and built equipment and developed an experimental paradigm, (both patented). He also co-authored several papers. He had wide interests in art appreciation and creativity in many genres, which he enjoyed throughout his life: ceramics, landscape design, architectural restoration and photography, all of which he pursued with professional perfectionism. He was a serious student of classical music, amassing a significant audio library.  Peter is survived by his former wife, Kathleen Dames, and his daughter, Isobel, (age 9), of New York City; his mother, Myrna Fivel, of Chevy Chase, MD; his brother, Jeremiah who lives with his partner Ashley Williamson, and three daughters, Ella, (age 9), Natalie, (age 6), and Lily, (age 2) in Catonsville, Maryland; Jeremiah's 17-year-old son, Ben, lives in Portland, Oregon. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, October 18 from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Community Room of the Town of Chevy Chase- Jane E. Lawton Community and Recreation Center, 4301 Willow Lane, Chevy Chase, MD.
