As a high school classmate of Pete's, I am not surprised by the accolades that appear here. Here's Pete's yearbook photo.

Peter and I met at Princeton in 1961. WE quickly became friends and spend hours sharing our quest for meaning and spirituality. I learned so much that I had never known about the possibilities of a loving friendship and will always be grateful for Peter's generous gift.
We drifted apart, but reconnected about 5 years ago and however limited our recent contact I'm so happy for it
happening.
Hoping that my love and prayers will help bring this great guy to a beautiful and happy rebirth.

Peter was an inspiration to many young economists. He was a wonderful mentor and great friend.

Peter was a mentor and inspiration to a generation of then-young economists at the Board. Though my work overlapped little with his main research interests, he nonetheless reached out with kindness and wise advice on many occasions. His influence on research in this institution still resonates. My condolences to his family.

Peter was one of the first people I met before joining the staff of the Board. His intellect and fun-loving personality were definitely a key factor in my decision to join the Board--and I am grateful for it. He will be missed. My condolences

The world has lost an immensely talented economist and a wonderful human being. Peter inspired generations of economists through his passion for research and generous advice. I first met Peter when I arrived as a dissertation fellow to the Board in 1992. I will never forget his kindness, thoughtful comments on my work, and the vast breadth of knowledge, not just in economics, but across so many disciplines. My sincere condolences to Marylee and his family for their irreplaceable loss. Wherever you are Peter, I hope they have good computational power... RIP, my friend.

It is rare to even meet someone who is simultaneously as smart, interesting and gracious as Peter, let alone get the opportunity of working with such a person. I'll always be grateful for that enormous gift.
The photo is of Special Studies in June 1976. You can see Peter standing in the last row.

Peter and I met in the fall of 1961 at a party given to first-year graduate students by Princeton's economics department. We have been friends ever since. It was clear from the beginning that Peter was brilliant. He was also perhaps the hardest working person I ever met. Economics was not his sole interest. He was also a polymath with far-flung interests, including the arts, science, and literature. In graduate school, I remember his reading one book of fiction each night, often staying up til 4 in the morning. Later, he became my boss at the Federal Reserve, which I had joined a few years after him. In his role guiding Special Studies, he was a caring manager and a leader with vision and compassion. All of us who worked there under his supervision know that he invested much of his own capital, doing battle with management to protect our positions and projects, thoughtfully seeking to balance the interests of an institution and those of his staff. He was the best and kindest
person anyone would ever have wanted as a boss---and friend. I will miss him very much.

Peter was one of the smartest people I have known and he had a major influence on my professional development. More importantly, he was also one of the most interesting people I have ever met and was great fun to talk to on everything under the sun. He was a great boss and colleague, and I will miss him greatly.

Peter was the father of our Daughter-In-Law, Margaret, the wife of Rev. Daniel C. Green and mother of Risa Catherine, who live and make their homes in Petaluma, CA. We did not know Peter well, but were glad to meet and make his acquaintance. We grieve his loss to all members of the family.
