PHILIP FRIEDMAN Obituary

PHILIP FRIEDMAN
Died Thursday, April 5, 2012, in Silver Spring, Maryland. A native Washingtonian and World War II veteran, Phil loved his wife, children, grandchildren and country.  He grew up with his parents, Joseph and Sara Friedman, and sister, the late Marilyn Friedman Pernatin, above their Georgia Avenue grocery store. (He would then become the food shopper for his family, spoiling them with his ability to pick the best fruits and meats).  After serving in the army in Europe during World War II, he graduated from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. This enabled him to become a CPA and enjoy a successful career, first with the SEC, then as a Controller for a small construction firm. Later, he would co-found the Upscale Resale thrift shop. A store dedicated to employing the mentally ill and helping them enjoy success in the workplace.  He is survived by his wife Beverly Kolker Friedman, children Lawrence, Leslie, Lee and David (Melissa), and grandchildren Joseph and Edward. Graveside services will be held Sunday April 8, 2012, 1:30 p.m. at Judean Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Upscale Thrift Shop, www.upscaleresalethriftshop.org/donations Services entrusted to Danzansky-Goldberg Memorial Chapels Inc. www.danzanskygoldberg.com

From David Carroll, son of Terence and Selma Carroll, and brother of Julie and Daniel Carroll:

Bailey and I are so sorry, as are Dan and Julie. Phil was a wonderful man, bright, charismatic, virtuous, and highly evolved. The world is in short supply of people like him.

My brother called me just now to tell me that Phil had passed away. Bailey and I visited Julie and Danny last week. We had not seen them in many years. We wanted to call you and Phil to see if we could visit, but Dan said that Phil was very sick. Bailey and I are so sorry for your loss of such a terrific husband and regret that we had not seen you and Phil in so long, since my mother Selma was alive.
