PHILIP MURPHY Obituary

PHILIP JAMES MURPHY
Philip James Murphy, 63, passed away unexpectedly on November 18, 2013, at his home in Winchester, Virginia. He is survived by his children, Philip J. Murphy, Jr. (wife Mary Hope Toothman) of Santa Barbara, CA; Angela Venetsanos (husband Yeoanny) of Centreville, VA; and Brandon Murphy of Seoul, Korea; his beloved grandchildren Abigail, Nicholas and Zachary Venetsanos; his mother, Jeanne Murphy of Seattle; two brothers, three sisters and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, John J. Murphy, a retired Air Force Colonel. Philip was a proud Irishman, a passionate lover of music and an avid reader who loved his family above all, especially his precious grandchildren, who cherished their Pop-Pop. Philip was generous with his counsel, with his time, and, most importantly, with his heart. He used his life's experiences to help others; not to lecture, not to judge, but to help them navigate the many paths that he perhaps had trod. He is remembered as a great father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend whose influence and love was unfailing. His great gift, his legacy, was his love, and we are all better for that gift. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 24, 2013, at Woodbine Cemetery in Manassas, VA, and a memorial Mass will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mt. Vernon Hwy, Alexandria, VA at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 27. Philip's family requests that in lieu of flowers, any donations be sent to Doctors Without Borders in his memory. www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/onetime.cfm??

I am Philip's sister. I have been comforted by these thoughtful messages, but would love to know who wrote the December 7th message?

My condolences to Philip's beloved family! I was blessed to know him in my youth & reconnect in later years. The times we shared are precious to me & will be cherished always. I loved hearing all his stories (a GREAT storyteller), & was always amazed at his memory! Sweet, gentle, passionate. I miss him.

I can't begin to tell how many times, and without condition, Phil was there for me in our times together and apart. I've so many fabulous memories of this wonderful man, who was easily one of the most humorous, intelligent, gentle, and caring souls I've known. It was an honor to have traveled within his inner circle, and to have shared so many times and events with his family, for whom he lived. Always remember, Phil, our drive through old Town Alexandria in our Halloween costumes, and my neighbors' cat, who uncontrollably groomed himself when scratched at the ears. Remember, too, how greatly I love and miss you. My hunch is that you're hanging with the many great rock legends whom you admired, respected and supported. Until we meet again, my dear friend .....

Whenever we visited, you always made me feel like a very important person when we chatted. Your gentle soul will continue to guide your children and grandchildren, and you are forever in my heart.

Your smile and your spirit are unforgettable. Without being "official" family, you were our family. We so miss you!

My deepest sorrow to all of the family. I have wonderful memories of Philip in our youth when the family was stationed at SAC Air force Base. He will be greatly missed. May God comfort all of you at this time.

You were so much more than my uncle. You were my friend and confidant before you were my uncle. You always welcomed me with kind words, a tight hug, and a warm smile. You introduced my parents and shared your family with me. I thank you for all that you did for me and will miss you until we see each other again.
