Raymond Shreckengost Obituary

RAYMOND C. SHRECKENGOST  Colonel, USMC (Ret)   May 7, 1923- October 29, 2011
Colonel Shreckengost was born in Cambridge Springs, PA, May 7, 1923, the son of Bertha and Charles Shreckengost. His interest in music and singing won him a full scholarship to any university in the State. Instead he chose to attend Westminster Choir College, in Princeton, NJ, where he planned to major in voice and minor in piano. But World War II intervened and Col Shreckengost joined the United States Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune in 1943, a very different environment from singing with Toscanini and the New York Philharmonic, but he loved the Corps and when he retired in 1976 he had spent 31 years, 11 months, and 12 days in the Marines. Col Shreckengost became a physicist, graduating from the University of Florida with high honors and received two more Master of Science degrees from the American University. He worked for the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory where he designed and developed missile guidance systems; Martin-Marietta where he was project engineer for the BULLPUP missile system as well as Anti-Ship Missile Systems; the CIA as the Deputy Director for ELINT, and finally as a Special Assistant to the Director for Simulation and Modeling. He leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Sheryl Peterson Shreckengost; two daughters, Brenda Rae Marshall and Stephanie Ward (Wayne Ward); two grandchildren, Lori Ward and Colonel Quinn Gummel, USAF, (Sally Woodyard); and one great-grandson, Master Quinn Gummel. Funeral services are at the Old Post Chapel, Ft Myer, on Friday February 24, 2012, at 11 a.m. Burial will be with Full Military Honors.

Thanks, dad, for a "ride" that substantially influenced my life and provided me the opportunity to recognize and try to change dynamics that needed attention. You taught me well, and I pray I have lived your lessons in a way that meet your approval. Your spirit is forever in my heart, guiding me endlessly. I love you.
