RICHARD BARRETT Obituary

BARRETT Richard David Barrett Dick Barrett passed away peacefully at home on September 5, 2017 surrounded by family and pets. He was born on September 27, 1931 in Cincinnati, OH, to Oscar Slack Barrett and Helen Kaiper Barrett. The family was in the river freight business and operated the Barrett Line of paddlewheel-driven steam ships for four generations along the Ohio and Mississippi waterways. Barrett graduated from the Choate School in 1949 and Yale University in 1953. He served in the US Navy as Lieutenant Junior Grade aboard the destroyer USS Tingey. Dick began his work career at Reynolds Metals Company in Richmond, VA where he was a production planner. He soon switched to banking and spent a decade in DC at the National Bank of Washington, becoming vice president of operations. The family moved to New York City and he joined Irving Trust Company but Dick returned a few years later to Washington to become executive vice president at First American Bank where he started the international banking division. Barrett turned to fundraising consulting later in his career. Dick was an accomplished singer and guitarist. He sang baritone through high school, college, adulthood and into his final hours. He was a member of the Augmented Seven singing group for many years and starred in the annual fundraiser show for the MS Society during the 1960s. The performances were attended by presidents, congressmen, Supreme Court justices and anyone who enjoyed topical political humor and a good laugh. Later in his life, Barrett was an enthusiastic member of the Hoopes Troops musical revue. He was also an avid ballroom dancer, sailor, photographer, reader, learner, traveler, humorist and an eternal optimist. Dick loved to build things and solve problems. Above all, he was most interested in other people, a quality that won him immediate affection and loyalty from anyone who had the good fortune to know him. Dick had three children by his first wife, Joyce Burland (nee Clifford). He was preceded in death by his second wife, Pamela Soldwedel Barrett, and his son, David Barrett. He is survived by his son Randy Barrett of Falls Church, VA; daughter Kimball Barrett of Boston, MA; stepdaughter, Karin Immerman, daughters-in-law Kendall Barrett and Molly Barrett and six grandchildren: Zack Barrett, Tyson Barrett, Caleb Barrett, Grace Barrett, Ella Barrett and Moses Barrett. He will be forever missed. Services at a later dateDick had three children by his first wife, Joyce Burland (nee Clifford). Uncle Dickie was warm, caring, and always treated us cousins with lots of affection. I'll never forget belting out "Rose of Washington Square" with him as the champagne flowed in G'Town. Our love and thoughts are with you, Lulie and Jamie
