Richard Clampitt Obituary

Richard Norton Clampitt passed away peacefully Monday, December 15, 2025 at the age of 88. He lived in Martinsburg, WV for a short time after having lived in Arlington, Virginia close to 60 years.

Born February 20, 1937, in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late William H. Clampitt and Amy Norton Clampitt. He went to Woodrow Wilson High School in DC and graduated from Benjamin Franklin University and American University. He served in the Army National Guard.

Richard worked as a Distributor for The Washington Post. He was a devoted member of Columbia Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School. He was a Certified Public Accountant and served as an adjunct professor at Northern Virginia Community College, Benjamin Franklin University, and Southeastern University.

Richard loved singing, especially hymns from the Baptist Hymnal. He had a lifelong love of the railroad, enjoyed traveling to the Outer Banks, and cherished meaningful conversations with others. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan and had a deep love of history, often quizzing his family. He frequently spoke of his grandfather, "Pops" Norton, who was his hero. Richard had a fondness for food—especially sweets—and above all, he loved his family and rarely missed his grandchildren's events. He was an exceptional mentor to many people from all walks of life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Joan Clampitt; son, John Clampitt; brother, Bill Clampitt; and two sisters-in-law, Mary and Jean Clampitt.

He is survived by his brother, Jack Clampitt; daughter, Elizabeth Freeman, and husband Ron Freeman; son, Richard Clampitt, Jr., and wife Erin Clampitt; daughter-in-law, Amy Clampitt; Grandchildren Marissa Freeman and her significant other, Holly Thompson, Elise Freeman and her significant other, Charlie Wells; LeighAnne Freeman, Alyssa Freeman, Chase Daley, Abbigail Daley, Allison Dugan, and Emma Clampitt.

Relatives and friends may call at Columbia Baptist Church, 103 W. Columbia Street, Falls Church, VA 22046 on Friday, January 23, 2025 at 11 a.m. A private family burial will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the American Cancer Society.
