RICHARD LaFLEUR

Richard Paul LaFleur passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at his home in Potomac, Maryland with his family by his side. He is the beloved husband of 40 years to Janet LaFleur, loving father of Alison (Charles) Meade, and James (Brittany), treasured Papa of Catherine, Johnny, Lila and Juliet.

Rich was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of the late Edward and Patricia LaFleur. His family shortly thereafter relocated to Dallas, Texas, where he established an enduring fandom for the Dallas Cowboys. The family moved to Northern Virginia and Rich completed high school at Langley High School in McLean. Rich earned his degree in Accounting from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he met his future wife Janet first semester of their freshman year and was a member of the Alpha chapter of Beta Theta Pi, making lifelong friends of his fraternity brothers.

Rich was the youngest of three siblings and is also survived by Scott LaFleur (Hilda) and Mary Beth Randall (Tony) as well as 10 admiring nieces and nephews and many extended family members and cousins whom he adored, along with many dear friends.

Rich began his accounting career at Alexander Grant & Co., which later became Grant Thornton. Rich worked at GT for 40 years, the entirety of his career, retiring this July. In his time at GT, he was the managing partner for the Washington, DC and Baltimore offices, on the firm's Partnership Board for three terms and was a widely respected leader in the DC business community.

His extensive community involvement included serving as Chairman for Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, Board Member for the Greater Washington Board of Trade, Co-Founder, Emcee and Co-Chair for the Greater Washington Government Contractor Awards and a member of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts. Additionally, Rich was a Board Member for Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area and Chair of the Hall of Fame, Trustee of Fairfax County Public Schools Foundation, served on the Advisory Board for George Mason University School of Management, on the Gala Fundraising Committee for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and was a member of the board of directors of Friends of Patients at the NIH. Rich helped re-establish the Winston Churchill High School Booster Club Hall of Fame in a fundraising effort to renovate the stadium field to improve the conditions for student athletes.

Rich was passionate about mentorship, serving as a role model and sounding board for countless colleagues, family members and friends. People were drawn to Rich for his selflessness, generosity and quietly hilarious sense of humor.

Rich was a natural athlete and committed sports fan, with passions for playing and enjoying football, baseball, basketball and golf, and he loved playing with colleagues, friends and family throughout his life. In addition to sports Rich had a deep appreciation for music, movie, literature and history and subscribed to the concept of life-long learning.

A Memorial Service for Rich will be held at Potomac United Methodist Church, 9908 South Glen Rd., Potomac, MD, on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 1 p.m.

Dear Janet & Family,

So sorry to hear about Rich's passing far to soon. I do not need to tell you this but we were all so profoundly blessed to have known Rich, he was just good people in every possible way. Rich was a true Beta Brother at Miami University. Nobody gave more of his time and effort, always with a smile on his face, a servant leader in every sense of the word. Although your time with him was far too short, you are profoundly blessed to have had such a wonderful influence and his legacy lives on thru his wonderful family! You are all in our thoughts and prayers!

God Bless you,

Rob & Jean Wirthlin

Dear Janet and family,
I just discovered Rich had passed away and am deeply saddened to learn of this. Although I only had the pleasure of meeting him twice, he and his wonderful wife, Janet, made such an impression in your desire and willingness to attend my husband´s service at Arlington, despite COVID. The world has lost a true gentleman who used all of God´s gifts in a profound and meaningful way.

I am grieved, so I cannot imagine your loss, but know you are comforted in knowing Rich is home and with our Lord and Savior. Know you have a lifetime of memories, but the loss to all who knew him and loved him is profound. I am one of those. God be with you and your family, and comfort you in the life and care you provided Rich. Love, Gwen Burchard Smith

My sincerest sympathies to Janet and Rich´s extended family. I worked with Rich at GT for several years in the late 90s and my lasting memories of him are that he was the best person I have ever had the privilege to work for throughout my entire career. His knowledge, professionalism and compassion for people permeated all aspects of his work.

My favorite fun memories with him were of playing softball on the men´s team the year we finally managed to win the championship. His recognition of competitive spirit allowed this "girl" to play on the men´s team when short men´s players, making for some all time memorable sports fun for me. We kept up peripherally through our mutual love of Words with Friends for the past decade or so, and I will miss our daily exchanges tremendously.

I know his loss will be most keenly felt by those closest to him, well beyond the memory of many of our professionally colleagues, but know that the rest of us feel his loss as well, knowing the world is a dimmer place for the loss of such an amazing person.
