RICHARD MORGAN Obituary

RICHARD MORGAN "Dick"  June 5, 1929 ~ October 20, 2013
Noted jazz pianist Dick Morgan had over 70 years experience as a jazz pianist and vocal coach thanks in part to the early direction of Duke Ellington and Tommy Dorsey. At age 10, he had his own 15-minute radio show in Petersburg, VA on Station WPID. He later had a half hour TV program on Station WTAR in Norfolk, VA. He drew the attention of jazz great Cannonball Adderley who laid the groundwork for Morgan to record three albums with Riverside Records. He recorded over 15 albums and CD's for various labels during his 70 year career. As a noted jazz pianist, Dick Morgan performed throughout the world, including the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Greenland and Puerto Rico. He played numerous concerts at the Kennedy Center, Corcoran Gallery, Constitution Hall, as well as the Smithsonian in concert with the noted singer Joe Williams. He has also participated in many of the recent Jazz Cruises. His son, James, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; his daughter, Anita; his stepdaughter, Verlon; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, other relatives, friends and fans. A memorial service honoring Dick Morgan's life and legacy will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, 1500 9th St., NW, Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests tax deductible contributions be made to Howard University's Law School Student Fellowships. Call Janelle Christian at (404) 313-8262. If you have any questions about the "Public Interest Fellowship Fund."

Dick and I met when we both had an office at the Georgetown Business Center. We quickly became close like brothers. We use to call each other brothers for life. We often had lunch, dinners, shopping, travels to Hilton Head etc. My true heartfelt condolences to the family. I will miss you dearly bro.

To Sylvia & Family,
Sincere condolences to you and your family. Dick was a Master Musician. I will miss his presence on the jazz scene here in DC. I remember his phenomenal playing at Sam & Harry's downtown on 19th Street. His presence at the East Coast Jazz Festival was unparalleled.

Ronnie Wells, Butch Warren, Shirley Horne, Keter Betts and many others who have gone before will be celebrating his arrival to his heavenly home. Rest in Peace Dick!
Peace & Many Blessings,

To the Family of Dick Morgan:

Dick and I were classmates at Howard University School of Law. Dick was a wonderful friend with a generous spirit. The Howard University School of Law Family is honored to call Dick Morgan one of its own. While we are certain Dick will be missed, we know that the Heavens have just added a musical genius to its Heavenly Jazz Ensemble.

RIP Dick,

Dick and I have been friends since the days of "A Place Where Louie Dwells" and "W.H. Bone"...way back in the day. The kindest, gentleness, and accomplished man you could ever meet. He always had a smile and a hug for you. God Bless you, Dick, I'll think of you always whenever I hear my special song you always played for me...."The Bridge Over Trouble Waters"

It was an honor and a privilege to be in the trenches with you in our quest for higher education. Seeking donations to the Howard University School of Law Scholarship Fund is exemplary, and shows your love for the institution. I would recommend that everyone donate whatever they are moved to contribute in the name of our mutual friend.
