SCHWARTZ

RICHARD ALAN SCHWARTZ M.D. (Age 84)

Richard Alan Schwartz M.D., of McLean Virginia passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jean Schwartz, sons Michael (Catherine) Schwartz, Christopher (Kristin) Syring and granddaughters Kaitlyn, Jesse and Sian.

A graduate of Cornell University and Cornell Medical College he was a respected cardiologist for 55 years and was a member of multiple medical honor societies. During his long medical career he was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital. He served as a consultant in cardiology, sports medicine and physical fitness at the University of Maryland. He was a Director of the Northern Virginia Institute for Continuing Education, Chairman of the Board for the Medical Society Services and Treasurer of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia. Dr. Schwartz was past Chairman of the D.C. Medical Society Committee on Physical Fitness and a charter member and past President of the Sports Medicine Association of Greater Washington.

While at Cornell he began his rowing career winning multiple collegiate national championships. After graduation he was on the gold medal U.S. Rowing team for the 1961 Maccabiah Games in Israel, the 1962 U.S. crew in the World Championships in Lucerne Switzerland and on the 1963 American Rowing team at the Pan American games. He continued his competitive rowing career in masters competitions nationally and internationally. He was a longtime member of the Potomac Boat Club and was active in the sport for over 45 years.

A private service and burial was held by the family at Fairfax Memorial Park on December 26. A memorial service will be held on March 9 at 3 p.m. at Temple Rodef Shalom, 2100 Westmoreland Street, Falls Church, VA. A reception will be held immediately after the service in the Temple social hall.

Dr. Schwartz was a lifelong animal lover so In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine and the Mary Ann Morris Animal Foundation in Bamburg, SC.
