Robert Erskine Obituary

Captain, U. S. Navy (Ret.)
June 18, 1938 – February 18, 2024

Robert Sageley Erskine was born June 18, 1938 and traveled extensively throughout both his childhood and adult life. In 1956, he joined the Navy and literally saw the world for the next 43 years. After retiring from active duty, he continued to serve his country and the Navy as a senior executive working for the Chief of Naval Operations as Director of Flag Officer Management and Distribution.

He died peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2024 in Springfield, VA at the home he and Sue had settled into in 1978. He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 66 years, Sue Vetters Erskine; son, James Michael Erskine and his wife Heather Lynn Erskine; and grandson, John Robert Erskine. He also leaves behind two beloved Boston Terrier grand puppies, Annie and Angel.

He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. After March 6, 2024 his full obituary may be found at www.fairfaxmemorialfuneralhome.com/obituaries

Mr. Erskine, a 'sir' to me then as now, called me one early day in 2008 with the greeting that he had good and not-so-good news for me, a Navy captain living on Coronado. I asked if I would know the difference...he chuckled, then laughed...replying that my career was full of challenging jobs and he was adding to that list...that turned out to be the good news. The bad news was that we were to pack up and move to Tampa, FL, after a mere 5 months in California.
We had a good talk...then 3 years later, he chatted again--I was to do a year-long deployment...and that was the good news.
He was and will remain, a positive memory in my life. Mike Franken.
