A restaurant opened recently near where I live, in California, and it reminded me of Bob. Shortly after he opened The Pizza Box, "BOB ROHR'S PIZZA BOX" where Woodrow Street ended at Lee Highway. I lived on Woodrow-- a short street between then-Lee Highway and Glebe Road, then State Routes 29 and 211. It would not surprise me if nothing in Virginia is still named for Robert E. Lee since my alma maters, nearby Woodlawn Elementary School, Stratford Junior High School, and Washington-Lee High School (W-L) would all be "politically incorrect", these days. On Glebe Road a stone's throw from my home was the Ball Mansion a stone's throw from our home and, I'm told, the community near W-L was named Ballston.
For years, I delivered the WASHINGTON-POST newspaper (Melvin Delker was my manager), leaving my basement bedroom mornings at 4:00 to at least get the ~135 Daily on porches before most left for work (I still recall it taking a lot longer to get the heavier ~150 Sunday edition out). That came to mind because I would close the Pizza Box weeknights taking a sausage and pepperoni pizza home each night that I closed (It was a one-man operation in those days) and morning came pretty early after Dad and I would share a slice with him listening for me to come home. Without Bob's operation giving me all the work I could handle, I would not have bought a slightly-used '64 VOLKSWAGEN and been able to attend college in California. One of my fondest memories was dropping back by, one night when I was home from college, Bob fixing me a meatball sandwich and wanting to hear about my adventures driving across the U.S. the previous summer and both my first summer in the Sierra Nevada and college. He was both genuinely appreciative for my small contribution to his starting his business but interested in me and in people. He probably would have been interested to know that I soon worked for a season as a dispatcher with the National Park Service, both jobs having changed my life greatly for the better.
Bob was a good man who my father liked and appreciated for his contribution to rhythm of our lives. My wife of 40 years and I watch old movies with great Italian food scenes like The Godfather and take a break to boil pasta and thaw-out the sauce Bob taught me to make, finish the movie and go to bed with a full stomach. Life is short, the world is small with many coincidences and people who contributed to our lives with their example of hard work.
Thank you Bob Rohr for the opportunities and the example of hard work above and beyond being a lifeline between street cops like my other best adult friend, in those days, Officer Quade-- Lt. John Quade after I went away to college, with the then-Arlington County Police Department who worked nights at SAFEWAY where my dad and I always grocery shopped. Those were better times.
