Robert Schwartz Obituary

Robert B. Schwartz, a longtime resident of Bethesda, MD who spent the major part of his career in management and legal positions with Communications Satellite Corporation (Comsat) in Washington, DC, died on December 7, 2024 at 88 years of age. He passed away peacefully among family members at Brighton Gardens of Friendship Heights, where he had resided since 2021.

With Comsat, Schwartz served many years as Secretary of the corporation and Assistant General Counsel for corporate matters as well as some years as Director of Public Information. Before joining Comsat in the mid-1960s he served for a few years as an appellate court attorney for the National Labor Relations Board, based in Washington.

Schwartz received his bachelor's degree from Tufts University in 1957, and after a year of graduate studies at Columbia University he attended Harvard Law School where he received his law degree in 1961.

Bob, as he was affectionately known by his friends, was born on November 23, 1936, in Paterson, New Jersey to Samuel and Bessie Schwartz, along with his older brother Ben.

Bob's wife of 40 years, the former Pushpa Nand of New Delhi, India, passed away in 2003. They had met at Columbia University and were married in New Delhi after Bob completed the active-duty segment of his U.S. Army Reserve commitment in 1962. Bob raised his family in Carderock Springs in Bethesda. His immediate survivors include their son Stephen, their daughter Deborah, Deborah's daughter Karanina, and Pushpa's twin sister Usha Sellers.

His family will forever remember him for his generosity, sense of humility, and strong moral compass. He had a passion for classical music and a love of the outdoors.

The family's funeral arrangements were private.

Stephen and Deborah,

I was deeply saddened to read of the passing of your father. We were colleagues at Comsat and very good friends. Also Pushpa. I have many fond memories of your home in Carderock and of many activities and adventures with your father, both at Comsat and in unrelated activities. Your father was a very wise and kind person. I do not know how to contact you, but if you read this note and would care to e-mail me, I would like to share some of those memories with you. Meanwhile, kindly accept my deepest sympathy on your Dad's passing. May his memory be for a blessing! Bruce Lane ([email protected]) (Formerly Comsat corporate secretary and assistant General Counsel)
