Roland Unger Obituary



UNGER Dr. ROLAND LOUIS UNGER Suddenly, on October 1, 2010, while vacationing in the Caribbean, Dr. Roland Louis Unger, CPA, passed away in Nassau, The Bahamas. Dr. Unger had become ill and was airlifted by the U.S. Coast Guard from the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Sea ship to a hospital in Nassau where he died. Dr. Unger was a Certified Public Accountant, and the Chief Accountant for the State of Maryland Comptrollers office. In addition to his private accounting practice, previously he was the Treasurer for the City of Westminster and an accountant for the State of Maryland Teachers & State Employees Supplemental Retirement System. Prior to his career in accounting, Dr. Unger was a Baltimore City Police Officer. In 1973, he went on to become a Police Officer for Baltimore County, serving on the Tactical Section S.W.A.T. Team. In 1977, he was the recipient of an award for an act of heroism in coming to the aid of a fellow officer. He later retired from the Baltimore County Tactical Team on disability. In 1972, Dr. Unger joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and served as a Class A Signalman. He was honorably released from active duty in 1978. He was proud to serve, and was a patriotic and loyal American who loved his country. Dr. Unger earned his Bachelor of Science at Towson State College, MD. He earned his Master of Business Administration in 2002 and his Doctor of Management degree in August 2010 at University of Maryland University College. He also taught advanced accounting courses for the University of Maryland University College and Strayer University. In addition to his professional service, Dr. Unger found time to provide 13 years of volunteer service as Trustee Treasurer for Mount De Sales Academy. He served 10 years as an original Board member, and was twice-President of the Baltimore County Board of Ethics for the Board of Education which he was instrumental in establishing on behalf of the Baltimore County Public School System. He also attended and was Past-President of Faith Lutheran Church, in Cockeysville, MD. Dr. Unger was born in Frederick, MD on December 11, 1949 and was the son of Louis Frank and Anna Elizabeth (Nee) Daylor Unger. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Elizabeth Leonard Unger (Nee Nee) Slye, son Christian Michael Unger, daughter Christine Velinda Holmburg, son Jonathan Andrew Unger and daughter Sarah Elizabeth Unger. He is the proud grandfather of William Brayden Unger. He is also survived by his former wife, friend, and mother of their children, Patrice Diane Unger, along with his former in-laws, Leo Henry and Shirley Johnson Ader. Throughout his lifetime, Dr. Unger counseled the benefits of higher education and exemplified the fruits which such an opportunity provides. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to the Better Opportunities Through Online Education Fund (BOTOE) at the University of Maryland, University College Foundation online at www.umuc.edu/advancement or mail checks, payable to UMUC Foundation to UMUC. Friends and family may pay their last respects on Sunday, October 10, 2010 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A., 2325 York Road, Timonium, MD 21093. A funeral service will be held in his honor on Monday, October 11, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 8 Sherwood Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030. Interment will be held immediately following at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, 200 Padonia Road East, Timonium, MD 21093.

I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with your family during this time. I was lucky enough to know him for a short time while working with him at the Comptroller's office. He was a very nice person.

Ann. My heartfelt condolences go out you during this time. James as you might recall introduced me to you and Roland as well as your daughter Christine last Thanksgiving. It sadden to hear and read of his death. He had a full life from what you wrote and his Memory and Spirit shall carry on for many years in the hearts and thoughts of friends and family alike.
