GOURDINE Ruby Morton Gourdine Ruby "Pat" Morton Gourdine went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at George Washington University Hospital. Ruby was born on July 8, 1948, in Simpson, South Carolina, to Bert Morton, Jr., and Ida M. Bullock. She was the youngest of three children and known by her family as "Pat." Her parents, brother Robert Morton and beloved sister, Betty Willis, have preceded her in death. Ruby spent some of her early years in Richmond, Virginia, Cleveland, Ohio, Washington, DC, and completed her education at Armstrong High School in Richmond, Virginia. Ruby returned to Washington, DC, where she met her husband, Wesley E. Gourdine Jr. Her career took flight upon completing her Doctor of Social Work Degree in 1984 from her beloved Howard University. Her work focused on children and families and issues of disproportionality in the child welfare system. Dr. Gourdine served on the Howard University School of Social Work faculty for 30 years, where she educated graduate students and mentored doctoral candidates. She loved Howard University and its commitment to social justice. Ruby had an impactful career that advanced the quality of life of those she served. While facing health challenges, she continued to teach and provided counseling up to the date she was hospitalized in January 2022. Ruby leaves to mourn her husband, Wesley E. Gourdine, Jr.; her son Wesley Gourdine III, and daughter Pamela Gourdine. Additionally, she is survived by her beloved nieces, Nicole Willis, Linda Gills, and Angela Johnson, cousins Carolyn Workman and Yvette Edwards. She also leaves to mourn brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends to cherish her life. On Friday, February 25, 2022, the funeral services will be held at Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1518 M Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005. Visitation at 10 a.m. Funeral 11 a.m. Interment at Fort Lincoln Cemetery. To attend the in-person funeral service, you must register at https://bit.ly/RubyGourdinefuneral.
