Gen Daugherty was the most inspirational leader I have ever known. Since I first knew him, I have tried to copy his style and demeanor. He always respected "little" people and gave them time and attention. His people skills were superb. A great leader; a wonderful man!!!

General Russell E. Dougherty, hero, mentor, guiding light, example of integrity, of honor, of genius, of graciousness, above all a friend, and so much more. This remarkable human being, a true Kentucky Gentleman, who had a deep and abiding faith in and love for God, enlightened our lives and filled them with happiness and with memories that will forever live with us. Thank you to all of you in the special Dougherty Family for sharing him with all of us whom he made feel special.

Barbara, Mark and Dede,
Bill and I are saddened to know of your loss. When you lose someone you love, memories become treasures. I treasure so many...I can't count them. It was my great joy and honor to have been his secretary for two years at Patch Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany. As all of you contributing to this memory book well know, he was a truly remarkable man. He did have a memory to end all... and always was kind and generous. One among many times that endear his memory to me is his stopping at the entrance to the J-5 building on a snowy cold day and asking the young Army guard if he was warm enough and comfortable. The young man about flipped! General D came up to his office and asked that thick door mats be ordered for the men at the front entrances of all of our buildings. This was done and was so typical of his extreme caring for people. I loved him. Our sympathy and love go out to you all.
Sincerely,
Carole & Bill Gemmill

Saddening to lose so wonderful a man. He epitomized Wadsworth's ode to the The Happy Warrior:
"This is the happy Warrioror,
this is He
That every Man in arms should
wish to be."
He truly made us wish.

I will miss Gen. Dougherty. He was a mentor, a leader and a friend to the thousands of us who served with him. He was always in front showing us the way, showing us how to do it throughout his selfless career. His influence was constant, pervasive and honest. It was a great honor to serve with this giant of a man.

It is with great sadness to learn belatedly of the general's demise. I only met him once, but I felt that he was a friend of mine through fond recollections of my dear aunt Frances Richards who was his teacher, mentor, and friend at Western Kentucky University -- a friendship which continued until her death at 97 years of age.
Russell, through his generosity, created the Frances Richards Journalism Scholarship at his alma mater WKU. He was and is held in highest esteem by all who knew him.

To the Dougherty Family,
General Dougherty has always been a will always be a personal hero of mine. My mother named me in his honor as a result of a close friendship with DeDe during their childhood. As a boy my family vacationed in Omaha and visited Offitt under his command. He greatly inspired me and my younger brother to dedicate our lives to service for our country. I am in Law Enforcement and my brother works for DIA after a tour at Offitt himself. My deepest sympathy to your entire family. We have all lost a great man and role model as well as my personal hero. If DeDe happens to read this, please e-mail me so I can put you in touch with Charlotte (my mom and your childhood friend from Louisville). Take Care and God Bless.

To the Dougherty Family,
My deepest condolences go to all of you. I worked as the receptionist at McGuireWoods, where Gen. Dougherty worked for many years. He was always such a kind man and cared about all of us. He treated all the staff as well as he treated the Air Force "brass" who came to the office. He taught us all about respect and gave us all such good life lessons. I will miss him!

Once as a new 2Lt at SAC HQ I met Gen Dougherty walking down the hall and two things impressed me very much. One was that a 4-star general would be walking by himself, and two was that he smiled and greeted me. His casual and gracious demeanor spoke volumes about his character and personality. Very interestingly, our commander at my next duty station, a full Colonel whom I highly respected, said that Gen Dougherty was the general that he most admired and wished to emulate. That made two of us. I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

We will always cherish the friendship shown us by this grand man and his ladies. He gave to all so much, with such class, but always so humble. His sense of humor was priceless and only added to the values that one could not help but appreciate and then practice. I can see him now smiling down on us all, may God Bless his family.

Dear Barbara,
I was out of town when I heard about Russ. I immediately wanted to tell everyone how much he meant to me and my family. I am from the "legal" side of his career and can attest that he brought the same skills, humanity and wisdom to our work as he did to our country and his beloved Air Force. My Russ, Capt. Russ Grimes, USAF, his wife Kristen, and Peggi join me in sending condolences to you and your family. Love to all and God Bless. Larry Grimes

I served General Dougherty several years at SAC Headquarters as special assistant and briefly executive officer. One of my jobs was as his speechwriter, which is kind of humorous to all who knew him, since he was a master of ad lib, arrticulate and thorough. But he let me keep trying.
He was one of the most brilliant Air Force officers I have ever known. I'm not sure we will ever see his likeness again.
He had a great respect for formal education and professional association and liked to cite my titles, so I'll repeat them here.

Barbara, Mark, Dede & Joe: Annette & I were terribly saddened to learn of General Dougherty's death. We were privileged to serve under his command at Second Air Force & SAC HQ. I served initially as his T-39 pilot at Barksdale until Brett Dula accrued 100 hours in the aircraft. At SAC I was DEP on the staff while he was CINCSAC. He was my mentor & afforded me the privilege of unique opportunities in my Air Force career. As I read all of the positive & most appropriate comments in the guest book, from many of my personal friends, I found them all to be true! General Russ Dougherty was the "finest of the fine" of all Air Force leaders ever to serve! Annette joins me in sending our sincerest condolences. Buck Shuler

In a eulogy, people frequently say nice things about people who don't truly deserve to have nice things said about them. But you could select any nice word or phrase to describe General Russ Dougherty and it would be accurate and agreed upon by all of those who had ever known or met him. He was a prince of a man, a superb General, and a mentor to thousands of Airmen who have served in our great Air Force. I was fortunate to have worked for him at Barksdale AFB in 1971 and our paths crossed many, many times in the years following. It was always a pleasure to be in his presence. I always felt uplifted after being in his company. I shall never forget General Dougherty. Our condolences to the family. The Gaylor Family (CMSAF 5)

It was my pleasure and honor to serve as the boom operator on the SAC Command Crew during General Doughtery's tour as CINSAC. I was the boom operator on his first "Looking Glass" flight after taking command of 8th AF. Always the gentelman, alway the perfect example of what I thought a general should be. We made many trips together. It was something to watch him interact with the many he came in contact with. He had time and compassion for all ranks. I learned a lot observing him.

Deepest condolences to the Dougherty Family. I had the honor to introduce the General when he was CINCSAC at an Air Section Luncheon of a midwinter conference of the Reserve Officers Association in D.C. and elicited a large smile from him as I ended my introduction of him with the words: "...the JAG who made good." I had the second honor and good fortune to spend some ten days with him and an elite group of retired 0-10 Generals and Admirals as we travelled to Israel for a high level visit which I served as the trip organizer & "introducer" of our group to the Israel Government and Military leaders we were to meet. All the 0-10s in our group were outstanding in their own right but General Dougherty's persona shown out over everyone. His warmth and congeniality radiated and warmed like the sun. I will never forget him and pray that God will hold him close in Heaven. BGEN Art Gerwin, USAF Ret.

Please accept my sincere sympathy to the family of General Dougherty. He was a great leader. I had an opportunity to meet the General back in 1976 when I was selected for an Air Force Association award. The prize for that award was a luncheon in downtown Omaha with General Dougherty on one side of me and General Jimmy Doolittle on the other at the head table. It is still one of the most treasured memories of my Air Force career! However, the memory and story doesn’t stop there. Over a year later, I was waiting in line for an x-ray to be taken at the base hospital at Offutt AFB. The medical staff came through and let us know they would be bringing General Dougherty in for an x-ray to complete his physical. In a few moments the General came down the hallway and stopped right in front of me. He reached out for a handshake and asked me how I was doing using my rank and name just as if we had seen each other every day. Next he asked about my wife and also used her first name. I was so impressed that a man of his importance and rank took the time to stop and greet me, just another young E-4, and remembered our names from a meeting a year earlier. Rest in Peace.

I first meet Gen. Dougherty as a 1st Lt. B-52H Navigator at K.I. Sawyer AFB, MI. My first ORI certification briefing was to the General. This is from a long time SAC Brat Bill and wife Susan McDonald to Dede, Mark and family. We extend our deepest sympathies in this time of loss but please be comforted in that your dad imprinted his warm personality on so many of us and improved our lives both professionally and personally....not to mention keeping our great country safe from the Soviets. But for a fortunate few, he was so much more than that. I was witness to your dad's all encompassing love when Bryant was feeling 'puny' as he would say and Kim was struggling with her own pain though that horrible illness. I was in awe watching your dad standing as a pillar of strength for eveyone....especially Bryant. I still marvel at the strength of his love and kindness even though he was in such great pain for his son. That sort of care and love he showed for the family was simply magnificent...which as you know was not always the thing we kids saw from our fathers in those deadly serious days in SAC. During Bryant's illness your dad even took the time to relay to me of some very complimentary thoughts about my own dad when he was in the control division along with a little career guidance one day while we were talking about Bryant in front Mark's house. Since I rented that house across the street from Bryant and Kim I was lucky to see the greatness of your father and your wonderful family in more than just an Air Force way. He is and will always be a hero to me and reminds me of my own dad. We will miss him. Bill McDonald, Colonel USAF Retired
