Today is your birthday. A glorious spring day, with daffodils cavorting about and all manner of buds sprouting from the warmed earth. Spring is your time, and will always remind me of your love of plants, flowers, trees. Today I'm planting forsythia cuttings in you honor. They will stand along the brick walkway leading to this old farmhouse, loyal sentinels of brilliant yellow to challenge the romantic pink blush of the redbuds, their neighbors.
Pink, your favorite color. A daring color for a tomboy who grew up amidst brothers. We bought pink material for a dress you made in eighth grade. And in 2000, we bought a pink suit in Cocoa Beach for you to wear for a talk on satellites at a conference in France.
I remember it all. Being with my dearest friend. I feel your presence at all times, and most fervently in the surge of blossoms and buddings each spring on April 16. In celebration of you today, beloved Ruthie.

Dear Ruthie,
Today is April 16th. Happy Birthday, darling friend. I'm celebrating your life on this soft, sleepy morning as the birds begin to chirp and flutter about the fragrant honeysuckle here at the pasture's edge. You would have loved this farm, with the horses grazing in bluegrass, surrounded by acres of deep forest. When you were just a girl, you used to ride my Morgan, Valor, and always said you wanted a horse when you grew up. We were horse crazy girls. If you were here now, I think you would have been drawn to black, powerful Merlin, who grazes within sight from across this field. He has a wide chest, huge shoulder and proud dark eyes. A magnificent soul. His mane is long and flowing, cresting an elegant curved neck. I like his clear-eyed spirit, which reminds me of you. He has never been ridden. He cannot be tied. I like him as he is. For himself. Not for human use. He follows me about at times, looking for a touch, maybe a good scratch. He expects to be acknowledged. Always in charge but with a sense of friendship, and open curiosity. When I look at him, his even frank gaze reminds me of you when you were a girl. Yes, I think you'd have liked Merlin best of all. Today, on your birthday, I send up these thoughts of this spirited horse in remembrance of a most spirited girl.
Until we meet again,
Dear friend.

I miss you to this day, Ruthie. When we were young, we used to muse about growing old together on a farm. We would have horses and make jelly and jam. Now I have a farm with beautiful horses. Yet no Ruth to make the jelly and jam. Instead, wonderful memories of a singular spirit unlike any other on this small planet. We all knew it then, when she existed among us. Where are you now, and what are you playing on the piano today?

Dear Ruthie,
I met you in Princeton, N.J. in 1978, when we worked together at a local restaurant. Then I went back to Italy, and we both led our separate lives. Yet I've been searching you for years, to get back in touch. After many years, I finally found out that you were no longer with us anymore. It was too late. You had passed away and are with the Angels now.
You were a wonderful mother,a wonderful worker, a wonderful pianist, and most of all a great friend. You have many friends, and in a certain way those friends are a continuation of you yourself. You will always live in my heart.
Thanks for all you gave to us.
God bless you.
Forever your friend,

Ruthie has been gone from us for more than two years. Yet she remains in my heart always. The spring she passed away, I planted three weeping willows on my farm in Maine, in her memory. They are thriving and growing tall. This spring I wll plant flowers at the base of each tree, in celebration of Ruthie, her endurng spirit, and the dear friendship we shared. With love to you, my friend.

Ruthie was one of those people who can do a lot of things and do all of them well. She had a career in technology, she had her other vocation in music, she had her family and friends. She also had great courage and fortitude.

I feel forever changed and inspired by knowing Ruthie and all her loves, her talents, her just-do-it-ness, her deep intuition and clarity of thought, her mindfulness of the moment. I loved how she so oftern used the words WONDERFUL and EXCELLENT in her expressions of feelings and thoughts. I have never known anyone like Ruthie and I feel blessed that she came into my life just a few years ago.

Ruthie, Dolphins and Rainbows
Ruthie was my best friend. We met at age 13. How very lucky I am, for having known her for so many years. The last time I vacationed with Ruthie, she was working in Florida on satellites. I stayed with Ruthie and Hannah on Cocoa Beach. On the last day of our visit together, dolphins swam up close to the shore, and followed us as we walked the beach for the last time. It felt as if good luck was following us along, what a wonderful way to close our altogether too-short visit. And as we stood looking out at the ocean one last time before heading back to our separate lives, a brilliant double rainbow appeared in the sky over the ocean. Only with Ruthie would such magical things happen all at once. She was a magical person.
