VAN ALLEN

SALLY S. VAN ALLEN

Sally Schall Van Allen, age 101, passed away quietly on December 5, 2022. She was born on October, 19, 1921 to Caroline Humphrey and Harry Charles Schall in Detroit, Michigan. She grew up in Charleston, SC and graduated from Ashley Hall School and Sweet Briar College. On November 11, 1944, she married Lt. Commander William Kent Van Allen of Rochester, NY. After the war, the Van Allens returned to Washington, DC where Bill practiced law and made many lifelong friends. In 1950, they moved to Charlotte, NC to open a new law firm, Lassiter, Moore and Van Allen, now Moore & Van Allen.

Sally had an infectious smile and endless energy which she shared freely with everyone. She loved Charlotte and threw herself into making the city even better. Sally has been President of the Junior League of Charlotte, Women's Association of Charlotte Symphony, Mint Museum Auxiliary, Greater Charlotte Dance Guild and Dance Charlotte. She has served on many other boards, including NC Board of National Museum of Women in Arts, Carolinas International Tennis Foundation, North Carolina Dance Theater and visitors boards of Johnson C. Smith University and UNC-Charlotte.

Sally received the Vanguard Award for personal commitment to the arts, two Spirit Awards, the Marie Rowe Award for volunteering in the arts. She was the first woman on the Vestry at Christ Episcopal Church.

Sally was a wonderful mother to her three boys and enjoyed her eight years as Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a devoted, fun grandmother to her six grandchildren and loved spending time with them. She cherished spending part of each summer for 100 years with her family at her cottage on Mullett Lake, Michigan which was built in 1921 by her beloved Aunt Sally.

She loved tennis, gardening, and most important, laughing and being with dear friends. She was a member of Charlotte Country Club, Chevy Chase Club, Mill Reef Club and Mullett Lake Country Club.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Bill. She is survived by three sons, Kent (Kay), George (Betsy) and Peter (Barbara), six grandchildren, Sam (Sandy), Charlie, Sally O. (Michael), Perrin (Cheri), Caroline and Peter Jr., and three great-grandchildren, Lee, George and Billy.

A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte on Friday, January 6, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, Sally would love for you to instead make contributions to Charlotte Ballet, Good Friends Charlotte, Mint Museum and Charlotte Symphony or the nonprofit of your choice.

Sally (Nana) was the wonderful lady that I had the pleasure to know. She was a kind and gentle lady. I will surely miss her dearly. May she Rest In Peace. My condolences to her family.

Sally was such a beautiful person, inside and out! She always had a twinkle in her eye and was such a dear to my parents, Becky and Fleming Stone. Thinking of the Van Allen family!

What a special lady. Just always think of her driving in that convertible with a dog hanging out the window. She always said how much younger she was than my mother 1 year to the day. So thankful she was a part of our life
