On August 1, 2002, SAMUEL PERKINS HAYES, age 92, of the Bridges Retirement Home, Hamden, CT and Washington, DC, at Branford Hills Nursing Home, Branford, CT. Hayes, a graduate of Amherst College, '31 and Yale University '34 was active in the fields of education, social psychology, and international economic development, having taught at Mt. Holyoke and Sarah Lawrence Colleges and at the University of Michigan. He served in successive governments in the 40's and 50's, and acted as a consultant to government and in the private sector well into his retirement, after having served as President of Foreign Policy Association in New York until 1975. Dr. Hayes, a native of South Hadley, MA, was an active member of the Democratic Party and was an avid and successful tennis player, well-known to those following the amateur circuit. With his wife, Alice Mary Cable, who predeceased him in May last year, he was actively involved in chamber music (playing the viola with perhaps more gusto than skill) and helped found the Amateur Chamber Music Players Association, with international membership. An important accomplishment for Dr. Hayes was seeing the admission of women to the prestigious Cosmos Club, in Washington, DC, where he was a member, following a push by Hayes and other concerned members, from 1973 to the 1980's. Hayes is survived by a son, Jonathan, living in Branford, CT, and a daughter, Susan Vasey of Tumut, Australia, along with six grandchildren, and a sister, Betsy Fredell of Rochester, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to UNICEF in Dr. Hayes' name.
