Sandra Daugherty Obituary

Daugherty

Sandra Jane Daugherty "Sandee" (Age 74)

9/23/49 - 10/16/2023

Passed away peacefully in Woodbridge, VA on Monday, October 16, 2023, after an extended battle with Parkinson's and other health issues.

She was married for 51 years to James R. "Jim" Daugherty, Col (Ret.) United States Air Force. The oldest daughter of the late Roberts H. Harrington and June P. Harrington, Sandee was born in Marion, Smyth County, Virginia, and lived her early life in Virginia, Texas, and Tennessee. After 26 years of active duty military life across Virginia, Colorado, Japan, Nebraska, and Illinois, she and Jim settled in Fairfax, Virginia in 1988, following Jim's retirement from the US Air Force.

She graduated from Bristol Tennessee High School in 1968 and attended East Tennessee State University, before setting off in 1970 to Washington, DC where she met subsequent lifelong friend Marian Mantiply, and future husband Jim, while working at the Pentagon. At the time of her retirement in 2017, she was the Director of the Institute for Land Warfare at the Association of the US Army (AUSA), where she had worked since 1991 in increasingly senior editorial and management roles. In addition to editing a variety of publications, she also worked as the producer/director for the television series "America's Army", film director for the Army Ten Miler, and traveled extensively to cover stories of interest to AUSA members and families.

Sandee was an avid bowler and tennis player in her twenties and thirties, and a seasoned traveler, having visited locations across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. In her prime, she was known by many to have a keen sense of adventure, often preferring to take roads less traveled out of curiosity, and even occasionally having street raced cars in her teens and twenties.

In addition to her parents, Sandee was preceded in death by grandparents Hale and Ruth Harrington, Stephen and Rose Pugh; beloved aunts and uncles Pearl and Jim Bradshaw, Stan and Margaret Pugh, Marie Parsons, Anne Harrington; and several other members of the Pugh, Harrington, Cornett, and Parsons families.

She is survived by Jim, her husband of 51 years; two sons Rob (Sue) and James (Kelly); grandchildren Conor, Meghan, Alison, and Kelsie; brother Dusty (Jeannie), sister Susan; nieces Quincey (Jason), Jennifer (Nibbie), Heather (Patrick); nephew Josh; one grand-niece and five grand-nephews, and several cousins. Additionally, she is survived by special lifelong friend Jennifer "Jennie Lou" Woods and her daughter Forrest.

A gathering to remember and celebrate Sandee will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 4 at 3200 Golansky Blvd, Woodbridge, VA 22192. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Fisher House (fisherhouse.org) in Sandee's name. Sandee was a wonderful person and mentor! I had the privilege of working with her for 9 years. Every morning we would have conversations about life and our families. She taught me so much and I cherish every memory I have of her. She is missed by so many!

Sandee was a wonderful colleague with a wry sense of humor. Working with her for several years on America's Army, Sandee displayed a talent for visual story telling. Shooting in the field or aboard ship brought the humor to the fore.
