SHIRLEY BOUNDS Obituary

SHIRLEY JEAN BEDELL BOUNDS
Shirley Jean Bedell Bounds reached her eternal destiny on March 5, 2013 blessing her beloved husband, Ken, once more, by joining him on the day he would have been 88 years old. He had been waiting for Shirley since his passing on June 10, 2010, after having been blessed with 59 years of a beautiful and truly loving marriage.Shirley Bounds was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and spent her formative years in Jefferson City and Kansas City, Missouri. She attended the University of Missouri where she met the love of her life, Ken. They were married in La Jolla, CA in 1951 and God blessed their marriage with five children. When not raising the children, Shirley was a hugely talented artist who honed her skills early in life. From sketch drawings with ink, to oil paints, to water colors, Shirley produced many landscape and portrait paintings over the years. She painted for the sheer enjoyment of the craft, but sold quite a few of her works. Many others can be found hanging in the homes of her children and grand children. During a six year period in the late 1970s and early 1980s she was resident artist at the prestigious Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Not content with the arts, Shirley tackled the difficult task of learning a language in her middle age. She became proficient in Spanish. She was able to converse in her new language and kept her skill sharp by reading Spanish novels and watching Spanish programming available on cable television. Looking to learn another language, she studied French and German in her later years.Shirley Bounds was a kind, considerate woman who provided constant love and guidance to her growing family. She was even tempered, caring and a great conversationalist. She was most happy in the company of family and friends, and they all loved being with her. When her husband's health was failing she was the perfect nurse and companion providing the help and love he sorely needed.Shirley is survived by her five children; Dennis Bounds of Redmond, Washington; Lissa Monroe of N. Little Rock, Arkansas; John Bounds of Thousand Oaks, California; Kathryn Arbia of Springfield, Virginia; James Bounds of Warrenton, Virginia; all of their spouses and 15 grand children. Funeral services will be held at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church on April 5, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Shirley will be laid to rest next to her husband and two sisters at Little Georgetown Cemetery in Fauquier County, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Special Olympics Washington, where grandson Timothy has competed over the years, via online at www.sowa.org or by mail to: Special Olympics Washington, 2150 N. 107th St., Suite 220, Seattle, WA 98133

My life was so blessed the year I met Ms. Shirley and Mr. Kenneth, I went to visit them with Lissa, and it was like visiting my own grandparents...They were so awesome, They were quick to point out how proud of their children and grandchildren they were. I had the trip down memory lane through the photos in the albums and all around the home. Then the tour of DC began...our tour guide was Mr. Kenneth pulling up to the front door of every museum and patiently waiting with his sweetie in the van while Lissa and I had the time of our lives. Off to lunch, then to Happy Hour at their home, dining in the "fine dining room". One of the best evenings of my life, all the stories they told while holding hands and sharing sweet little glances to each other...a true Love Story! such a blessing to see. That Man Loved his wife and she adored him. To you the family, you were so blessed to have this beautiful woman in your lives...and to the Monroe boys, your mom is just like her...A Real Treasure from God. Ms. Shirley is having the time of her life now, holding the hand of sweet Kenneth. She will be missed.
