GOTTLIEB

SIDNEY V. GOTTLIEB "Sid"

Sid passed away after a long illness on July 11, 2022 just after his 94th birthday. He is survived by his devoted wife and BFF Dorrie Powell Gottlieb, his cherished children, Nanci Gottlieb, Susan and (son-in-law) Jeff Bernstein and adored grandsons Jason and Eric. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, graduated from the University of Illinois, served with honor in the Korean war, came home met and married Dorrie. Their life together took them to Pittsburgh, PA, where he worked for the Bettis Atomic Energy Commission. His next move took him to Rockville, MD, where he worked for Documentation, Inc. He ended his career working for NIH as a Management Analyst in the Office of the Director. His favorite interests were being with his family, music, racing his sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay, gardening, traveling and kayaking. Some of his activities were being the President of the Non-Affiliated Jewish Sunday School. He was a member of the Parish Creek Sailing Association and an avid sailboat racer winning numerous awards . He taught safe boating and he was Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 710. He served on the Rockville Board of Elections and was a member of the Rockville Concert Band for almost 40 years. A man with an incredible sense of adventure. After retirement he was recruited to assist as a crew member on a sailing vessel doing a transatlantic crossing. His adventure started in Gibraltar with a final destination of Florida. The planned four-week crossing was complicated by poor winds and a broken mast and concluded in Puerto Rico after five weeks. Sid earned another degree from the University of Maryland. He became a volunteer at the Holocaust Museum and the Smithsonian Museum of American History, where he was a docent and a member of the Board of Directors. He also volunteered at the Smithsonian Gardens and Hillwood Museum. His was a life well lived with honor and integrity; and, he will be greatly missed by many. Special thanks to the wonderful people of Montgomery Hospice and to his long-time caregiver Ruth Bonta. He will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice or The Smithsonian Museum of American History or Hillwood Museum
