Dear Elizabeth, Vaugan and Conor,
Just last night received the call from Fatima at the Embassy about your sad loss.
We will forever remember our times together, at Tony's in Azoia, your shared visits for my Mother's birthdays, and our last wonderful reunion at Refugio. After hearing the sad news last night, your Christmas card just arrived today. The photo of you all and our memories together will forever be remembered. Private messages to follow. Meanwhile, love and strength...a hug Vaughan and Conor.
Lots of Love,
Karen, Fredy and Nadine

This news comes as a blow to all of us here in Lisbon, Portugal, where we enjoyed the Bagley family imensely during Elizabeth's tour as US Ambassador and Smith was official "spouse". Smith and I shared many times together, dinners, outings, ceremonies, some at the Sintra house (with Conor and Vaughan), and his original humor, outgoing spirit added to the fun. His loss is felt here. And Liz, we keep our friendship and are with you in this tough time. warm regards, Buck Buchanan, Luso American Foundation, Lisbon

Dear family of Smith - we realize there are no words that can begin to address the depth of complex emotions you are facing after his death. We can only hope that you are surrounded by loving family and friends who are providing some measure of comfort to you during this time of grief. We have extraordinary memories of shared experiences with Smith and with many of you over the several decades we were his friends. We will miss him tremendously and will continue to hold each of you in our prayers and thoughts. With full hearts, - Nadine and Jerry
