Dr. Stanley L. Blumenthal, a retired Pediatrician who practiced in the Washington area for more than 40 years, died of a cardiac arrest secondary to complications of multiple myeloma on July 18, 2003. He was 83.
Dr. Blumenthal was born in Baltimore. He was elected Phi Beta Kappa at Johns Hopkins University. He attended Johns Hopkins Medical School and completed his Pediatrics training at Johns Hopkins, Michigan, Bellevue and Boston Children's Hospital.
He served as a captain and senior Army Medical officer in Korea, before joining the staff at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C. He had a Pediatrics practice in Montgomery County for more than 40 years and served on the staffs at Holy Cross Hospital, George Washington, and the Washington Hospital Center.
In 1956, he married his wife Anita and they had one child, Roger. Dr. Blumenthal was an avid golfer and sports fan, who was passionate in his support of the Johns Hopkins lacrosse team and the Washington Redskins.
Dr. Blumenthal developed a severe case of pneumonia in February. His illness prevented him from attending any Hopkins lacrosse games this past spring except for the national semifinal game at Ravens stadium, in which Hopkins beat rival Syracuse. He loved playing golf and attending sporting events with his son and in recent years adored his time with grandson Ross, whom he helped to teach how to throw and catch a ball.
Dr. Blumenthal is survived by his wife of 47 years, Anita; his son Dr. Roger Blumenthal, a Cardiologist and Director of the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Preventive Cardiology Center; his daugther-in-law Dr. Wendy Post Blumenthal, also a Hopkins Cardiologist; his grandson Ross, and his brother, Dr. Leonard Blumenthal.
Funeral services were held in Baltimore on Monday, July 21. Memorial contributions can be made to "Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Preventive Cardiology", c/o Mrs. Fran Karas, Carnegie 538 -- Ciccarone Center; Johns Hopkins Hospital; 600 N. Wolfe Street, Baltimore, MD 21287.

Thank you "Dr.B." and Anita with all of our hearts for the happiness that you all have given to Diane, myself, Kenny, Suzie, and Laurie. Never once did any of our kids complain or resist in going to see you two. You all always made us feel good and well fed with the lollipops. Kenny's little 4 month old boy, Jackson Douglas will be listening to many funny stories about "Dr. B" and Anita.

We so deeply regret the loss of a dear friend, a wonderful person, a great pediatrician. Dr. B was great support, that we haven't known since, for us and our first two children. He, with Anita and Roger, set the bar for caring.
We will keep you in our prayers.

Dear Mrs. Blumenthal,
I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Blumenthal. Mom called me yesterday. Even though it's been a few years since I've seen you all, I always get the update from Mom. Dr. B and you always took such good care of Noelle, DJ, and I. We will certainly miss Dr. B. - and I do miss bringing Grant to him for checkups!
You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
