STEPHEN L. SQUIRES
The colleagues of Stephen L Squires, PhD, join the family in mourning his passing on April 26, 2019. We acknowledge his remarkable contributions to advancing computer science in the interests of national security. He sought societal benefits and impacts, and achieved both, serving his country largely out of the public eye. He was a graduate of Drexel University, BSEE, Electrical Engineering (1970), which recognized him as Engineer of the Year in 2003. He earned an MS in Computer Science from Princeton University (1972) and a PhD in Computer Science from Harvard University (1998). Stephen's government service spanned nearly 30 years, first at the National Security Agency and then at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, where he served as a research Program Manager, then Office Director, and then Special Assistant for IT. He subsequently worked at Hewlett-Packard as Chief Science Officer from 2000 to 2006. In 2006, Stephen founded Kelvin 1687, a consultancy focused on the future of IT. At DARPA he led efforts advancing modern parallel computer architecture and associated Unix-based systems software, with lasting influences on the design of modern large-scale computing. Stephen understood technical trends often before they were noticed by others, and also played a key role in creating new trends. In the late 1980s he helped advance a computing-research partnership among federal agencies that continues to this day as nitrd.gov, the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Program. In his long career as a manager of research, Stephen stimulated his colleagues to be creative and aggressive in taking on the most challenging problems in computing and national security. We extend our condolences to his wife, Ann Marmor-Squires; his daughters, Gayle Squires, MD and Robyn Squires; and the entire Squires family. It is with a heavy heart that I write these words. I first met, Stephen Squires, SLSQ, in our joint efforts in various U.S. Interagency Working Groups associated with developing the High Performance Computing & Communications (HPCC) Program in the early 1990s. The HPCC Program gave birth to many scientific and technological achievement in high-speed computing, networking, grand challenges of science and of course, the Internet. Stephen was a visionary scientist that inspired projects in academia and industry. He was a committed patriot to the advancement of U.S. scientific and technological competitiveness. He loved working at DARPA but, he also understood the importance of engaging the wider scientific community. He worked closely with the National Science Foundation to help advance academic researcher's access to parallel computers at the highest levels. He invested his own personal time and that of his talented staff at DARPA, to advance the HPCC Program. I truly believe it would not have been half as successful without Stephen's whole-hearted support.

Later on, right after 9/11 when he was at HP, he recognized the importance of Cyber Threats and took out the time to help spur interest in this vital area. Stephen gave of himself in sharing ideas. His accomplishments are hard to document as he did not write articles or research papers but, he inspired many innovations and insights by incisive questions and remarks that had a critical influence on technological and programmatic developments across many areas.

May his memory be a blessing to his family and his country - both that he so dearly loved.

I had the privilege of working with Steve in the late 80s and 90s when I was working with Al Gore in Senate and the White House. His deep knowledge and broad vision helped shape the legislation we wrote and the programs we funded. I always learned something new, interesting, and important when I talked to Steve. He made a difference.

On April 26, 2019, Stephen L. Squires, PhD, of Potomac, Maryland, passed away quietly following a stroke. He was the beloved husband of Ann Marmor-Squires, devoted father of Gayle Squires, MD and Robyn Squires, beloved brother of Michael Squires and Leslie Squires, MD. Shloshim Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 2, in Potomac, MD. (Contact [email protected]) Dr. Squires was the President and Founder of Kelvin 1687, Inc. He previously served as Vice President and Chief Science Officer of Hewlett-Packard Company; research Program Manager, Office Director, and then Special Assistant for IT for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; and Computer Scientist at the National Security Agency.
