I had a course with Steve at Medill School, Northern Western Uni.
He was very nice to me as an international student. He was asking me questions in the class to make sure I’m involved with the discussion.
RIP Steve and thank you

Steve was a good friend for me during our time at USA Today and afterwards when I went to Knight Ridder/McClatchy. I'm so sorry to read this. I'll never forget him. My deep sympathy to all.

Stephanie, Cayla and Sasha: I came to know Steve in all four of his jobs, from young AP reporter to seasoned boss at CQ. Among the scores of folks I worked with over 40 years of covering the U.S. military (I took the attached photo of him as we flew over Iraq in a UH-60 in May, 2004), he was the rare two-fer: an excellent journalist and, at least from where I sat, a fundamentally decent guy who was universally respected. Please accept my condolences.

Dear Stephanie. I had the good fortune to know Steve for years as a fellow journalist and was always delighted to see him during our shared reporting adventures on Capitol Hill and elsewhere. He was a good friend and an excellent journalist. My deepest sympathy to you and the family. Dave Montgomery

Steve was a friend to talk skiing with when we were both in the newsroom of USA Today so many years ago. I'm so very sorry we've lost him - a really good man.
