SUZI GOOKIN Obituary

GOOKIN SUZANNE JOHNSTON CAUSEY DWYER GOOKIN "Suzi" 1924 ~ 2014 Suzi Gookin, a colorful rebellious and energetic character who died in Georgetown, February 14, 2014, was born in Baltimore, MD to a proud old Maryland family. Her grandmother was invited to the White House after her book, Maryland Women, was published. Mother Katherine McClellan Luckett won a voice scholarship to Peabody Conservancy. When her father, William Winfield Scott Causey, lost money and his seat on the NY Stock Exchange in 1929, Suzi was tutored at home and read through his vast library, including her eternal favorite Proust and all of Balzac's Human Comedy. At 17 she eloped with Charles A. (Al) Dwyer, and moved to Charlottesville. A faculty member, impressed with her literary knowledge, insisted she attend and write for the Univer- sity of Virginia when the only co-eds were professors' daughters. After her divorce, she married Washingtonian Richard Gookin. Associate Chief of Protocol, he and Suzi attended many social and political events. She started writing features, reviews, and social columns for O. Roy Chalk's Examiner. Roberta Flack credited Suzi with discovering her at Mr. Henry's. She then wrote interviews for The Georgetowner (please see their tribute: http://bit.ly/1hGIo2U), and her popular column, "EEN&T," covered the lively social scene of the 70's and 80's. President Johnson once told a crowd, "Suzi writes with more perception than the other reporters." She'd often be seen squeezed into her open "71 Bug convertible with other bon vivants like Bobby Short, Gloria Vanderbilt, or La Scala members, all singing out loud to the radio. After living in London and Rome she became a neighborhood activist and wrote for The Washington Post, but always refused to grow up. Suzi befriended artists, writers, rock stars, politicians, street bums and surf bums, Mafia wives, titled Europeans and Hollywood actors. She loved tennis, stylish cars and clothes, the color purple, reading, writing, and dancing. She leaves daughters, Allison Dwyer Utsch of New York City and Liza Lowndes Gookin Hodskins of Arlington, VA; grandsons, Philip and Adrian Utsch, and great-grandsons, Josiah, Lucas and Phoenix, who will miss growing up with her. A "Memory-all" will be held in Georgetown June 7. Donations welcome to Josiah's SaveTheNautilus.com or the Georgetown Library's book repair fund. I remember this lady from years ago, when she interviewed a friend of my Mum's who came to the States to be with his brother, who was undergoing extensive Neuro-Surgery at Georgetown University hospital. She wrote an extensive article in the Georgetowner about the procedure, and the family from Chevy Chase who supported the family through the whole ordeal. Will always remember her for her special bon-vivant, and her extremely flamboyant personality. RIP.

I loved her VW bug convertible, and her mile-a-minute banter! And mom, too, loved her so!

Oh Suzi, you filled my house with laughter and sharp-tongued wit every time you came over- kept my mother on her toes! I will always have the sound of your laugh in my ear...and, you gave me the best baby-sitter ever (thanks Liza!)...love, Bella
