Tom was truly dedicated to bringing common sense to education and to realizing the dream of universal education. He was selfless and truly a joy to work with. The world of education has lost a true gentleman and a source of great wisdom.

Working with Tom on the Research Network on Teaching and Learning was a tremendous privilege. He taught me so much - he will be greatly missed by all of us.

Tom was truly a gentleman, able to sustain

and inspire his colleagues with a vision of

the possible, and kindly in his ways. I will

miss his working visits to Pittsburgh, his

good conversation on matters of policy and

family, and his enjoyment of the retreats

at Glade Spring.
