Thomas Johnson Obituary

Thomas Cahill Johnson passed away from glioblastoma on November 19, 2024. In his words: he had "a wonderful 67 years" and he "couldn't have asked for more." Born April 20, 1957 in Gardiner, Maine, Tom was the fifth of six children. His parents, Edward Devine Johnson and May Agnes Johnson (née Cahill) died in 2016 and 1966 respectively, and they are welcoming him home. His big brother Ed Johnson Jr. also greets him in heaven. He especially could not wait to see his mother again. He is survived by siblings: May Kepler, Margie Chavez, Bill Johnson, and Kathy Landerer; step siblings: Bill Smith, and Sandy Smith; and his aunt Betty Pitera. He met the love of his life Susan Johnson (née Overholt) at McLean High School in 1974. His proudest accomplishment was his marriage and partnership with Susan, along with the family they created. He is survived by his wife Susan and their children Michael (Cora Martin), Olivia Hinebaugh (Jason), and Owen (Samantha). For the last 15 years of his life, he was "Fither," a beacon of love, fun, and joy for his six grandchildren: Lucas, Phoenix, Francis, Kit, River, and Ciaran. He is also survived by almost countless cousins, nieces, and nephews, as well as by friends he loved like family. His neighbors will also sorely miss "Mr. Tom." Visitation will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 26 from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m., with a celebration of life at 6 p.m., rosary to follow. Memorial Mass at St James Catholic Church in Falls Church Wednesday November 27 at 10 a.m., Burial at Fairfax Memorial Cemetery at 12 p.m. "Goodnight and joy be to you all."

Over the years I knew Tom, I never saw him in a down moment - always cheerful and friendly. I was a fellow Intelsat employee, multiple year car pool buddy until 1995 and noon time runner who never attempted to match Tom's long distance.
My condolence to his long time love, Susan

Tom was an all-around great guy who knew how to get things done while making his compatriots feel good about their shared efforts. I'll miss him, that's for sure.
