Thomas Kuchenberg Obituary

Thomas C. Kuchenberg, a retired government official and author, died on April 13, 2024, at his home on Capitol Hill, after returning from a three month cruise through the South Pacific.

Tom was well known in his local community from his work on the Eastern Market Community Advisory Committee and as a patron of the performing arts. His civic work on the Hill dated back nearly 30 years when he co-founded a group to educate homeowners on how to understand and challenge their property tax assessment. Tom and his late wife, Geri Rosen, loved to travel and experience different lands and cultures and spent much of their retirement pursuing this hobby. They traveled by plane, train, bus, car, and ship and visited all seven continents. He spent summers in a cottage that he and Geri built on Cape Breton in northern Nova Scotia reading and following his other pastime, the weather.

Born in Marinette, Wisconsin in Door County in 1942, Tom grew up with a love and admiration for the water and natural beauty. He worked on the Great Lakes as a merchant marine, in Alaska on the Trans Alaska Pipeline, and doing political advance work in his native Wisconsin. During his time on the Great Lakes in the 1970s, he co-authored a book on the environmental threat to one of the nation's greatest natural resources called "Reflections in a Tarnished Mirror: The Use and Abuse of the Great Lakes."

He came to Washington, DC initially to attend Georgetown University in the 1960s and came back later in the 1970s to attend law school at George Washington University. While in law school he worked at the iconic Georgetown music venue, the Cellar Door and in the U.S. Senate under the patronage of Wisconsin Senator William Proxmire, where he met his future wife, Geri. Later in his career he worked in the office of the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services on a myriad of health and social issues, most extensively with the Food and Drug Administration. After retiring from federal service, he focused on travel with Geri and his civic work at Eastern Market and in the community. He and Geri often opened their home to visitors and offered affordable accommodations to young interns and staffers working on Capitol Hill.

Tom was known far and wide as a teller of tall tales, frequently in long holiday letters and on Facebook. He often amazed himself that others took his outlandish words as fact, especially one memorable fable that reported on the high winds that had lofted his granddaughter Meera off the street and into a tree in Lincoln Park, where she had to be extricated by a squad of trained rescue cats. New friends and family were warned that if they took the bait in one of Tom's stories, they might be way down the road before they started to question its veracity.

He is survived by his three stepchildren Deb Sawislak of Seattle, Ellen Sawislak of Olympia, and Josh Sawislak of Alexandria, VA, as well as four grandchildren and friends across the globe. Wherever weather is discussed, tall tales are told, or someone is planning an exciting adventure, Tom will be there in spirit, if not in person. Any desired donations should be made to a local civic or charitable organization in his honor. A celebration of life will be planned later this year.

Our Family met Tom in the summer of 2011, while walking out to the point at White Point, Cape Breton. Our Children were 7,9 &11. We have seen him every summer since, except 2020. Tom has watched the children grow into young adults. We would look forward to seeing Tom in Cape Breton, enjoying getting together to go hiking, dinners at each others cottages, Bon fires, movie nights and going out to The Chowder House for dinner. He especially loved joining us for Bon Fires on the beach at White Point. Telling scary stories and watching the stars. The kids would laugh at his stories and Tom would get them going, he´d be right in there just like one of the kids. Tom also loved our dog Poppy. I was shocked and saddened to hear this news of his passing.
He will be dearly missed. My deepest sympathy to his Family.
White Point will never be the same.
We Love you Tom.

We have known Tom from his many visits to Door County, WI. Just across Green Bay from Marinette, a convenient stop off for him to visit a myriad of friends. One visit included our wedding reception in Baileys Harbor where a wild night of eating and dancing led Tom to a nap on our cellar door! A trip to Nova Scotia included his generous offer of a night at his cosy cabin. We will miss Tom!

So sorry to hear of Tom's passing. We worked together for many years at HHS and he was always the life of the office. His fun nature and passion for meteorology was always an adventure while watching him explain what was occuring. RIP Tom

I am a Capitol Hill neighbor. I met Tom just in the last couple of years while walking my fox hound, Winston. He was sitting on the stoop reading the paper, and we started chatting. Tom had dog treats, so Winston was an immediate friend. I am so sorry to hear the news of his passing. I will miss randomly running into him on the sidewalk, seeing him on his stoop, and hearing about his adventures.

I first met Tom around 1967. We quickly became friends and remained good friends ever after, He was a warm, generous person who often told some tales, in north country accents that would have us falling down with laughter. He was as quirky as the cats he loved who were as quirky as any cats you have ever seen. In the summer of 1970, I visited him in Door County where he was living in a log cabin on Lake Michigan and had adopted a litter of wild kittens. On my first evening there I was surprised by one of the cats who surprised by one cat who liked leaping from the rafters onto people and then climbing back up to do it again. Another cat in that litter did his own fishing. Now Tom had told me about this kitten in a letter and I thought is was anouther tall tales until one day I saw it with my own eyes. I walked out on the shory pier where the kitty was hunkered down in attack mode staring into the water. Suddenly it dove in. A few moments later it surfaced with a sunfish clamped in its jaws, swam about ten yards to shore, deposited it on the beach, and then returned to the pier to do it again.
Like Tom, I liked to travel and live in different places so we would often not see each other for years but his friendship and sparkling personality were always there, unchanged, whenever we reconnected. He is and will be sorely missed. Peace & Love Forever Tom.

We met Tom on a trip to Costa Rica. We enjoyed seeing him a few times a year. Sy had long discussions with him trying to solve world problems. He really enjoyed telling Rita tall tales as she frequently fell for them. He also enjoyed swims in our apartment building pool and brunches at Irelands Four Courts. We will miss him. Our deepest sympathy.

I first met Tom when he worked at the Cellar Door booking musical acts. A totally unique human being with a wonderful sense of humor. The photo was taken when he visited me in Portland in 2020.

I met Tom on the Grand South America cruise last year and he quickly became a member of the 7th floor Happy Hour, sharing tall tales and old jokes. I will always remember our day on the Amazon! We met again on the recent Grand Australia/New Zealand cruise. Tom was amusing, kind and articulate. He will be missed.

I had the honor and pleasure to once be Tom´s boss at the Department of Health and Human Service. Ha! Tom knew what to do and did it, no actual "bossing" required. And always with a wry insight into whoever we were dealing with. I admired Tom greatly. It was a joy to be Tom´s colleague.

Tom was someone I admired great and actually (in some ways) wanted to be.
I admire his personality and his many adventures. He was kind enough to be famiky to my mother when my father left and I was lucky enough to be presented a (signed) copy of his book. Sorry to hear he's left us.
