Both of my kids had Mr. Funkhouser for PE. Just as is said, everyone who knew him, loved him. We remember him mostly for the kiss and go line and the loud music. The line was not the same on the days he was not there and when he was he had an infectious spirit that set the tone for all to have a great day ! I can't imagine how many lives he touched and how he will be missed. Thank you Mr. Funkhouser. You made our elementary school days fun and memorable.

Todd and I were roomates at FSU and best man at my wedding. We had some amazing adventures together with trips in Europe and Philippines. Loved that man like a brother. So many memories are flooding in. The friend everyone wishes for in their life and a mentor to thousands of kids. Love you Todd. So glad we caught up again the day before.

It was my good fortune to coach football with Todd at Park View High School. He was a thoughtful and considerate person in all situations. His sincerity was obvious to those with whom he worked. His students had the outstanding opportunity to have a truly special mentor!

I was a student in the first years that Stonebridge high school was open and had the privilege of having Mr. Funkhouser as both a teacher and football coach. Despite that being more than 20 years ago, I still think back to the positive example he was and appreciate all he did for me and my fellow students.

Todd was more to us than just a great teacher, he was a friend. Our family is so very sad of his passing and sorry for your family’s loss. My kids were the lucky ones to have had the “Funk” as their elementary school teacher back in the day. When telling our kids of the news they both had so many stories to tell. Our kids are adults now and if they still can remember those wonderful memories, you know you had a one of a kind teacher! I will miss my birthday and Happy Mother’s Day texts ( that you never missed) and my husband will miss his every morning chats at the gym. Their last chat my husband came home and said the “Funk seems really happy in his life”! We’re going to hold that close to us, that he loved his life. I pray God will find you all comfort during this time. Todd I hope you’re cranking that radio speaker up like you did every day back at carpool pickup. God Bless

In Loving Memory of Todd Funkhouser
It’s hard to find the right words to express the sadness of losing Todd Funkhouser. The last time I saw him, he was asking if everything was going good — giving that familiar thumbs-up, and then I replied with double thumbs-up.
Every moment of his was truly positive, encouraging, and full of warmth. His evergreen smile could brighten any room and lift the spirit of everyone around him. Todd’s kindness and joy will always be remembered and deeply missed.

What a wonderful obituary to an obviously very special man. I see a lot of him in you Lauren. And reading his beautiful tributes from former and current students made me think of this poem. Todd was so clearly beloved.
Late Fragment
And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

I met Todd roughly 15 years ago through mutual friends. I would invite him out to social events in Va and would see him a couple times per year. I had just texted him on Monday about some upcoming events when later that day a mutual friend texted me that he'd just passed. I was shocked & very saddened by the news. Todd was such a good guy and very enjoyable to be around. My deepest sympathy to his family and to his students that saw him every day.

Our family is incredibly heartbroken to have learned of his tragic passing. He was an inspirational and fun teacher who clearly excelled at his craft and loved his students no matter the circumstances. Our daughter treasures the time she had as his student over twenty years ago. We are all the better for having known him. Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to his family, friends, current and former students - all who loved him. Rest in eternal peace, Mr Funk. The Roe Family - Ashburn, VA

Todd was one of our neighbors. I didn't know him well but my husband did. He would hang out on Friday nights for a few hours showing up wearing those funny toe shoes saying he couldn't stay long cause he had to go to the gym or had a to go running the next day. If any of the neighbors needed help he would be there. My husband and I are just devastated he just seen him 2 days prior. Prayers go out to the whole family during this time

Mr funkhouser was the absolute best pe teacher, we would sometimes bond over metal music and finding out which one we both liked. He would always wear shorts a shirt and toe shoes. I was kind of close with him and we had a lot of memories, I did a 5k run with him, and we would talk. He was the funniest teacher I'd have ever met and I remember he would come to our class and take time out of his day to play games with us. In pe he was really fun when we'd play games, when he were waiting in line we would give him a high five or even headbutt his hand. I was devastated to hear the sad news about him passing away and I'm deeply saddened. I hope his family's doing well and hope the best for all of them. You were a great running buddy and PE teacher Mr funk.

I never knew Todd, but I know lots of people that hike that Billygoat trail and Billy goat is treacherous she is unforgiving and one has to be skilled to be able to Traverse that trail. My niece has done Billy goat six times and taking people with her very carefully and cautiously I’m very saddened over the loss of this young man whom he was much be loved. I understand from his students and Louden rest in peace Todd AJ.

Honestly, Mr. Funkhouser was a really great PE teacher. He was also really close with my 5th grade teacher, and he'd always come over to hang out and play board games with my class every Friday, whenever he was available. He'd come to judge gingerbread houses during a gingerbread decorating competition, he'd try snacks with my class, and he made a lot of memories for me, and others.
Mr. Funkhouser was an amazing teacher in general, and I remember my class would always headbutt his hand every time he offered to give a high five at the start of every class. He was also energetic and outgoing every day, even in the morning.
It's devastating to hear that he passed away on Monday, and I hope he's doing well wherever he ends up after death.
-A former Sugarland student, Jessica.

Mr. Funk touched the lives of both my husband & I. We were in the first class he taught, I believe, and to great fortune became friends going forward. He always had this calm, cool demeanor & an amazing way of making everything feel less heavy. It is an incredible loss that he is no longer walking this Earth & making all the lives that encounter him somehow better. We hope we can all walk forward with a little more Funk in our hearts and minds as we cross paths with people. We wish our utmost condolences to his family & everyone else feeling the great void left by his absence. Rest in peace, Todd, and thank you for everything, including the things you didn't know you made better.

I lost count of how many times my daughter has commented over the last 5 years that he made her day better. Just about every week, including just this last week, as I drove by in the morning to drop her off, I had to fight the urge to get out of my car and thank him for his daily good deeds. Sadly I never did, and while I obviously would do it if I had another chance, I am comforted by the fact that this wonderful soul had no shortage of people of all ages and backgrounds who loved and admired him. My deepest condolences to those closest to him; may you find respite from the pain and solace in the fact that even from afar it was easy to see how he made this world a truly better place.

Mr. Funk was born to be a teacher. He treated all of his kids the same and wanted the best for each of them. He also would stay after school for anybody and could make anyone feel comfortable asking for help. What a massive loss for future generations. I consider myself very lucky to have had him as a teacher. RIP Mr. Funk.

Todd brought joy and enthusiasm to Sugarland every day. As a teacher, he was exceptionally gifted in working with students across grades K-5, challenging each student to be active, healthy, and happy. Not only was he a great teacher, but he was also a kind coworker who made thoughtful gestures daily and treated everyone with love and respect. His contributions to the Sugarland Community were immeasurable, through all of his work leading and supporting school events and PTO activities such as the Walk-A-Thon, Field Day, and playing on our school basketball and volleyball teams. Todd was truly the spirit of Sugarland as we welcomed and cared for everyone, and made the perfect mascot wearing our Wildcat costume! We all hope to have the passion and commitment he maintained after 30 years of teaching in LCPS. We love you, Todd, and will dearly miss you!

What a loss for us all. I had the pleasure of working with Todd at Horizon Elementary School. The best sub job I ever had was teaching with Todd as a long term PE teacher. He taught me so many things about myself and my abilities! What a very special person. I was blessed to see him last Thursday at Sugarland and will cherish our last conversation. Rest in peace my friend.
