TOGO WEST Obituary
TOGO DENNIS WEST, JR.
On Thursday, March 8, 2018. Born on June 21, 1942 in Winston-Salem, NC, he was the only child of Evelyn and Togo D. West, Sr. He died suddenly while at sea of a heart attack. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Gail Berry West; devoted daughters, Tiffany West Smink (Dan) and Hilary Carter West; loving grandchildren, Jackson West Smink and Natalie Berry Smink. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and a Juris Doctor from Howard University, graduating first in his law school class. A dedicated public servant, he held senior positions in three presidential administrations, serving as Associate Deputy Attorney General in the Justice Department in the Ford administration; General Counsel of the Navy, Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense, and General Counsel of the Department of Defense in the Carter Administration; and as the Secretary of the Army, and Secretary of Veterans Affairs in the Clinton Administration.Funeral services will be held at Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at 2 p.m. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to MedStar Health Foundation, 10980 Grantchester Way, 8th Floor, Columbia, Maryland 21044.

Years ago, I was one of many young lawyers encouraged by Togo to choose public service as a long-term career. He was an inspiration to so many people and a lawyer of the highest quality. Prayers to the family. May he rest in peace.
