Grandpa,

Thank you for being the best grandfather anyone could ever ask for and being the rock in the family. I will always remember and admire you for your courage, your strength, determination, hard work, independence, and your stubbornness, but most of all, for all your love. You are an honorable man for always trying to do the right thing and setting the record straight and you will always have my utmost respect. And thank you for passing these traits onto my father.

Some of my fondest memories of you revolve around your sense of humor and incredibly contagious smile. Here are just a few of them: How you always told me to stick a phone book between my pants and my butt before getting spanked, and then scream like it really hurt...Your joke of me being destined to marry a black man...How you always called me the Malaysian Girl and how Grandma would always scold you for it...How you wore your worn out muscle Ts, shirts, and sweaters with holes for the “extra air” they let in...How it rained when someone sneezed...How the mosquitoes bit me and the bees stung me when it was you and your toothpick...How you would laugh when you squeezed the bones of my wrist or hand too hard...How you would ask me if my teeth had fallen out when I dropped a piece of rice...The many times you made fun of my Chinese or lack thereof...How you would put on your black sunglasses and look at me and smile because you knew it made you look cool and way too cute...How you would match my hand up with yours and say that I have the hands of a man because of my fat and stubby fingers...It was you that showed me the importance of laughter; thank you. I will always remember that it was you that took me trick-or-treating and how cute you were with your exercise routine and 3 pound dumbbells.

Thank you for playing such an active role in my life. I will cherish our time together forever. You will always be in my thoughts and heart. I love you and miss you more than words can describe.

Your Granddaughter,

The Malaysian Girl

Grampa,

Thanks for all the playful teasing and laughter you’ve shared with me over the years. No one was ever able to inflict such physical discomfort (poking, pinching, stretching my skin) while making me laugh so hard. That’s what I’ll always remember when I think of you. I know I forgot how to speak Chinese, but I know that you felt my love and spirit every time I held your hand or hugged you or kissed your cheek. I loved seeing you smile and hearing you laugh, and I know that you’re in heaven looking down on me and smiling still.

Your granddaughter,

Thi
