Valerie Fellner Obituary

FELLNER VALERIE J. KOREK FELLNER On Friday, February 19, 2008 at her home in Washington, DC. She was 101 years old. Born in Budapest, Hungary on December 26, 1906. She studied in Hungary and in Vienna, Austria. Her first marriage to Professor Bela Ivanyi Grunwald ended in divorce. She came to the United States in 1938 with her second husband, William. He was Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley and later at Yale University. During the Nixon Administration, Professor Fellner became a member of the Council of Economic Advisors and the couple moved to Washington. Mrs. Fellner was the author of many essays and book reviews published in Hungarian magazines and literary journals. Her lengthy article written in English about the modern Hungarian novel appeared in 1968 in the Volume Fiction in Several Languages of the American Academy of Sciences. Her book post-Hungarian, Utomagyarok was published in Budapest in 1992. She is survived by her daughter, Anna Thomas; a granddaughter, Laura Becker; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces; nephews and her devoted caretakers. A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 17, 4 p.m. at 4201 Cathedral Ave., NW, Washington, DC. Private interment will be held in Oakland, CA. Contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
