WALTER ECKBRETH Obituary


 
WALTER L. ECKBRETH  (Age 78)  
On Tuesday, May 1, 2012, of Arlington, VA, died of complications of ALS disease at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. Walt was born on June 22, 1933 in Alliance, OH. He spent his early years in Pittsburgh, PA, where his parents grew up. His family moved to Virginia in the early 1940's. He was a graduate of George Washington High School, Alexandria, VA, Class of 1950, and of American University, Class of 1955. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958, assigned to the 1st Cavalry Band unit in Korea. In 1964 he joined the General Services Administration as a Contracting Officer and worked there until his retirement in 1990. He joined the Northern Virginia Senior Softball League in 1995 and enjoyed playing with a number of teams through the fall of 2011. Over the past few years Walt and his wife enjoyed attending both Men's and Women's Basketball games at American University. He also had a deep love for the automobiles he and other members of his family owned, resulting in an eclectic collection. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Catherine "Cathy" Eckbreth, Deborah Eckbreth, daughter, Walter L, Eckbreth, Jr. (Cynthia), son, Sally Rosholt (Don), sister, and nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family on Wednesday, May 9, 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Dulin United Methodist Church, 513 E. Broad St., Falls Church, VA 22046. A memorial service will take place on Thursday, May 10, at 3 p.m. at Dulin. Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of Dulin Methodist Church or the ALS Association, 1275 K Street, #1050, Washington, DC 20005.

Thinking of Lowell (Walt) and my mom today who were more like brother and sister than cousins. They passed before their time but continue to live on in our hearts and memmories. They are the reason I try to live every day with gratitude and joy.

Cathy,my sincere condolences on the passing of Walt. May you have the comfort of his life and the remembrance of the wonderful times you shared. I am glad that I had the opportunity to participate in Senioir Softball with Walt. I know that his laughter and spirit will be missed on the playing field.
