WAYNE COSTLEY Obituary

COSTLEY WAYNE JOSEPH COSTLEY Passed away December 22, 2014, at UNC Memorial Hospital. He was surrounded by many loving members of his family. He was 83. Wayne was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest child of the late Barbara L. Costley and Francis J. Costley. He was beloved by his late siblings, Peg, Barbara, Bill, Fran, and Tom. Wayne lost his mother at the age of ten and his father just six years later. His siblings played a large role in his childhood and upbringing. He attended St. Mary's School in Lynn where he met his wife, Nancy Bemis. Wayne was the first member of his family to attend college; he graduated from Boston College earning a degree in Mathematics and Physics. He also earned a Master's degree in Geophysics from Boston College, where he graduated first in his class and received his diploma from John F. Kennedy. He then married his high school sweetheart Nancy and they moved to Tennessee where Wayne attended the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology and earned another degree in nuclear physics. He had a successful career that moved him to the Washington, D.C., area when he started working for the Atomic Energy Commission. Wayne and Nancy raised their six children in Maryland and enjoyed their vacation home in Vero Beach, Florida, for over twenty years. During those many vacations in Vero Beach he loved playing football on the beach, sitting in the surf in the late afternoon sun, and fishing For the past 17 years, Wayne and his wife, Nancy, lived in Coachman's Trail in North Raleigh. Wayne was an avid basketball fan (a Duke man at heart but an enthusiastic supporter of UNC and NC State teams as well). He volunteered in numerous medical studies at UNC Hospital. He also spent countless hours doing anything for and with his six grandchildren in Raleigh. Wayne loved his Jack Russell-Corgi mix, Crash, and took him for neighborhood walks twice a day. Those who knew him well will also remember his penchant for an evening bowl of ice cream, or two. Wayne's greatest love and his proudest accomplishment was his family. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, his dog, Crash, and by six loving children: Wayne J. Costley, Jr., of Glencoe, Illinois, Warren Thomas Costley of Williamstown, Massachusetts, Mary Beth Bathke of Vero Beach, Florida, Mark F. Costley of Bethesda, Maryland, Christopher B. Costley of Laguna Beach, California, and Courtney Anne Whalen of Raleigh, North Carolina. Wayne is also survived by eleven grandchildren, to whom he gave so much: Caroline, Cate, Bridget, Luke, Campbell, Kelly, Paige, Lilly, Mackenzie, Aislinn, and Griffin. A celebration of Wayne's life will be held in February.

I am so saddened by Mr. Costley's passing. I have lost a great friend and confidant. I looked so forward to running in to him as he was out walking Crash, and I was walking my dog. We would chat for a long time, and I so enjoyed his life stories and wisdom. He was always so caring about what was going on in my life and would always ask about situations and events that we discussed. He was a very accomplished man, and I only regret I did not have more time with him. I miss you greatly Mr. Costley and thank you for all that you were to me.

I was very sorry to hear about Wayne's passing. We've known Wayne and Nancy these last 15 years or so as our nearby neighbors in Coachman's Trail. We also crossed paths with them because their granddaughters swam on the same swim team with our sons, and we got to know Wayne's daughter Courtney and her family as well.

We will certainly miss seeing Wayne and his faithful companion, Crash, on his daily walks in front of our house.

Deepest sympathies and condolences to his family.
