Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Professor Lash was a wonderful teacher and one of the fastest speakers I ever encountered; you had to stay totally engaged just to understand what he was saying. He changed the dry subject of business into a fascinating subject and would often tell anecdotes about his experiences as a practicing attorney making them both interesting and funny. Unlike some professors he made each one-on-one a learning experience and was quick with praise.

His stories did not only relate to the subject of law. We would often hear about his son, Will, and it was obvious that this child was the light of his life.

I wasn’t the only student who admired and respected him. He was elected to give the commencement speech for the class of 2000. The speech was, as usual, fast and funny and at the same time touching. I’m sure a lot of the people in attendance who weren’t tuned into his rapid-fire pattern missed a lot but he got a standing ovation from his students.

For those of us who knew him, it’s a terrible shock. He was brilliant, funny and kind. Our hearts go out to his wife and parents and everybody else who loved him and Will.

Bill was my suitemate our freshman year at Yale and we both moved to Morse from Branford together sophomore year. He was as hard a worker as they come and his great success in life is a testament to that hard work and to his character. I am thankful to the Good Lord for having had the privilege of knowing him and calling him a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. May God have mercy on his soul.
