William Phipps Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of William Michael Phipps, a beloved husband, father, uncle, friend, and respected attorney, who passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025 at the age of 63 in Herndon, VA. William Michael (Mike) Phipps was born to the late Preston and Helen Phipps on November 8, 1961 in Roanoke, VA and grew up in Galax, VA. Mike lived a life filled with love, laughter, an unwavering commitment to his profession, and a deep devotion to his family.
Mike graduated from Roanoke College in 1984 with a BA in Political Science and Government and was a proud alum for life and member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. Mike then moved to the Washington, DC area to attend George Mason University Law School. Mike had every intention of returning home to Galax after his law school graduation. However, during the first week of law school, his plans were quickly curtailed upon meeting the love of his life, Katherine (Kathy) Stoides Phipps, while he was searching for books needed to complete an assignment which unbeknownst to him, she had already checked out. The rest is history. Mike and Kathy graduated and received their Juris Doctor degrees in 1988. They married in 1989, beginning his "Big Fat Greek Wedding" life. On March 28, 2000, Mike and Kathy welcomed their beautiful daughter, Konstantina (Dina) Helen Phipps. If you knew Mike, you knew all about Kathy and Dina and his deep love for them. Mike was a devoted and wonderful father, husband, and proud uncle to his nieces whom he loved as daughters. His office walls were covered with pictures of his family and he never tired of telling others their accomplishments.
Mike was a career prosecutor in Prince William County and for the past 10 years, he was a Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney, serving as the head of the Domestic Violence unit. His life's work was to keep the community safe and mentor others. Mike was not only a talented, successful, and well-respected attorney, but a gentleman and consummate professional as evidenced by the numerous honors and awards he received. In 2006, Mike served as the President of the Prince William County Bar Association. In 2012, the Prince William County Bar Association awarded him Trial Attorney of the Year Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. In 2017, Mike was the recipient of the Arthur W. Sinclair Professionalism Award. In 2019, Mike was honored for his devotion, loyalty, and service to the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney and the citizens of Prince William County and the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. In 2024, Mike was honored with an award for his outstanding contribution and 30 years of dedicated service to the Prince William Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney.
Mike was a true gentleman but, above all, Mike loved his family, friends, and community. He shared with them all his interests, including but not limited to his love of Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, Bob Dylan, and camping. He will be missed tremendously.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his sister Mary Phipps Guinn.
Mike was the beloved husband of 35 years to Kathy and loving and devoted father of Dina; brother-in-law to Bessie and Manny Staurulakis, George Stoides, James Guinn, Jr.; proud uncle of Chresanthe, Dina and Anastasia Staurulakis, Dina Anne Stoides and Sabrina and Arthur "Adam" Guinn, Nephew of Dino Stoides, cousin of Olin and Lee Mumpower and his chosen brothers Allan, Ken and Tony
Funeral services for Mike will be held on Friday, April 11 at 10 a.m. Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, VA. Graveside services will immediately follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Herndon, VA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Mike's honor to the American Diabetes Association or to the Memorial Beat the Odds Scholarship for Mike Phipps. Money for the scholarship should be sent to PWCBF (Prince William County Bar Foundation) at 9108 Church Street, No. 345, Manassas, VA 20110. Online condolences may be made at www.adamsgreen.com.

Mike was a fraternity brother and fellow '84 graduate of Roanoke College. It was great knowing Mike while at RC and although our paths never crossed since then, I thought of him from time-to-time and hoped to see him again. He was a terrific person and I know he will be missed. See you further on up the road, my brother.

I was the first professional Spanish interpreter at the courts in Manassas starting in October of 1989. I knew Mike as a young attorney for over twenty years and was touched by his kindness towards to me. Unlike many others, Mike was always friendly and showed me respect. He was a fine attorney and I was happy he joined the Commonwealth Attorney´s Office. It was a privilege to know Mike. May he rest in peace. My deepest condolences for his family, friends and colleagues. Stephanie Williams

On behalf of Pi Lambda Phi, please accept our sincere condolences on William's passing. Hopefully, everyone who loves him will be able to be together to celebrate his life and share fond memories of him.

I've updated our records so that we will remember William again when our fraternity convenes for our annual gathering this summer in what we call our "Chapter Eternal Remembrance Ceremony." The names of brothers who have passed are read, candles are lit in their memory, somber fraternal prayers are recited, and beautiful songs are sung. It's our way of noting that although they are no longer with us in body, they are remembered.

P.S. The included Coat of Arms with the middle band blacked out honors William´s transition to the Chapter Eternal.
