Wilson Dizard Obituary



DIZARD WILSON P. DIZARD, JR. (Age 87) Wilson Dizard, Jr. retired Foreign Service Officer, journalist, author, and scholar, died at Sibley Hospital on August 31 after a brief illness. Mr. Dizard lived at the Ingleside retirement community in Washington. Credited with coining the phrase, "The Information Age," he wrote eight books including "The Coming Information Age, An Overview of Technology, Economics and Politics." He finished writing his forthcoming book "Digital DC" this summer. It will be published this fall. Born in New York City, Mr. Dizard''s first federal job was a year-long stint at the age if 18 in Washington with the Architect of the United States, working on the National Gallery, National Airport, and the FDR Library. He received his baccalaureate from Fordham University in 1947 after wartime Army service. Mr. Dizard joined Time Inc. as a writer for Architectural Forum in 1947. The US Information Agency recruited him as a Foreign Service Officer in 1951. He held assignments in Washington and at posts in Istanbul, Teheran, Athens, Dhaka, Warsaw, and Saigon. After leaving the Foreign Service in 1980, Mr. Dizard worked as a telecommunications consultant, policy analyst and Georgetown University lecturer. He was a member of the Cosmos Club. Mr. Dizard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lynn Wood Dizard. His other survivors include his sons John, Stephen, Wilson, and his wife Avery; and Mark, as well as four grandchildren: Philip Dizard, Wilson Dizard IV, Alexandra Dizard, and Olivia Loving. A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Dizard was celebrated on Saturday, September 5 at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ingleside Supporting Fund.

Sincere condolences to Wilson's family from Catherine Lincoln (Mrs. Robert A. Lincoln) and sons Henry and Tom. Wilson was always extremely kind and helpful to Bob whether he was writing about Ed Murrow and USIA, or even doggerel verse. Wilson will be much missed by his many friends.
