Martha Scully Obituary

Martha Anne Scully, 63, the daughter of Rose Anne Seebach and the late Henry F. Seebach, died on July 29, 2014 after a lengthy illness. She had recently retired after a 30-year career as a speech and language pathologist, lately at the Joyce Kilmer Middle School in Vienna, Virginia. Ms. Scully was born in Staten Island, New York and grew up in Syracuse, New York. She graduated from Trinity College, Washington, D.C., in 1972, obtained a master's degree from George Washington University, and studied for her doctorate at Syracuse University. Settling in the Washington area, Ms. Scully became an active member of the Junior League of Washington and chaired its annual "Capitol Collection," a Christmas shopping extravaganza, as well as the League's other charitable fund-raisers. She was a member of several organizations, including Washington-Rockville Lodge 15 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Madison (Connecticut) Beach and Racquet Club, and the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). In addition to her many honors and awards during her career, Ms. Scully was listed in Marquis' "Who's Who in America" for many years and was named "Woman of the Year" in 1990 by the American Biographical Institute. Of late, Ms. Scully concentrated on chairing the scholarship committee for the Maryland, Delaware, and District of Columbia Elks Association, which annually distributes more than $50,000.00 to college-bound seniors in high school. Her special avocation, however, was awarding two-year vocational scholarships to high school seniors seeking job training and certification. In her own lodge, Ms. Scully served as an officer for several years and worked on service committees helping veterans and students. She was an ardent believer in the Elks motto, "Elks Care, Elks Share." Ms. Scully leaves behind her son, Roger Tehan "Rory" Scully III, and her sister, Priscilla Anne Schwab. Ms. Scully's sister, Madonna Anne Seebach, predeceased her. Ms. Scully is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Meredith Anne Schwab and Patrick Henry Schwab of Washington, D.C. Relatives and friends may call at the Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, (valet parking), on Thursday, July 31, from 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Patrick's Church at Norbeck and Muncaster Mill Roads in Rockville on Friday, August 1, at 12:30 p.m. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Ms. Scully's name to Team River Runner, 5007 Stone Road, Rockville, MD 20853 or the Christ Child Society of Washington, 5101 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Suite 304, Washington, D.C. 20016.

Martha was a classy lady who loved her son and wore the most beautiful, sometimes outrageous seasonal and holiday sweaters to keep us amused and entertained. Yes, she was the hostess and entertainer...God bless her!

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Martha at Kilmer Intermediate School for many years --nothing less than a class act! I'm sure she is in heaven and getting ready to organize another fundraiser at any time now. Goodbye, special lady....

Martha was a friend and good colleague to me at Kilmer all those many years. After she left Kilmer and I retired to GA, I lost touch with her. However, I think of her often and her loss saddens me. My deepest sympathies and prayers to Rory, Priscilla, and the rest of her family. As long as we hold Martha in our hearts and memories, a part of her will still be here.
