Vasilios Psaromatis Obituary

Vasilios P. Psaromatis was born on May 23, 1942, as the fourth of 14 children to Panagiotis and Maria Psaromatis on the island of Elafonisos. At the age of seven, young Vasilios left second grade to join the work force and help support his family in war-torn Greece, and he never retired. Deep faith, hard work and perseverance characterized his life up until the end, at age 83. The fishing boat on which he labored had reached the shores of Africa by the time Vasilios was eight years old. By the time he was 16, he debarked on the shores of America for the first time, at the port of Houston, Texas. Determined to succeed, through great struggles, he became self-educated in both Greek and English, he managed to become a US citizen, start his own successful construction business, and eventually bring his extended family to the Unites States. Vasilios met the love of his life and wife of almost 60 years, Margaret Jesse Page, in 1966 in Speculator, New York, and with God's blessing, built a large family with nine children, 44 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren to date. Vasilios's children include the two priests of the parish of Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church in Upper Marlboro, Maryland: Fr. George V. Psaromatis and Fr. John V. Psaromatis. Above all, Vasilios valued his unshakeable Faith in God and the Orthodox Church, and taught his children to do the same. He treasured his wife, children, and family, and often expressed his deep gratitude to God for them. He was generous and practiced sacrificial love, whole-heartedly giving to those who asked for help, even when he didn't have much to give. With great labors and sacrifice, overcoming countless obstacles, Vasilios fulfilled his goal of building a hotel on the island of Elafonisos, called Kalimera Inn. He worked hard there up until the end, having wrapped up the season in October 2025, just before he became ill. Vasilios fell asleep in the Lord on November 28, 2025, at the age of 83. He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret, and his beloved children and their spouses: Panagiotis and Lisa, Vasilios and Maria, George and Aretie, Michael and Areti, Kiriakos and Paschalia, Fr. George and Presbytera Mary, Andrew and Leila, Fr. John and Presbytera Katherine, Nicholas and Anna; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nephews, and nieces. Eternal Memory!
