David Grade Obituary

Grade, David N.

Dave N. Grade, age 72, of Wausau died Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at Hospice House, Wausau.

Dave was born on October 5, 1940 in Wausau to the late Harvey and Ruth (Nelson) Grade. He married Mary Potter on December 21, 1968.

Dave attended Wausau Schools K-12 and graduated from Wausau High. He earned a BA and MA in Music Education from UWSP. For forty-three years he taught music at Rothschild, Easton, and Hatley Elementary Schools. Several generations of children enjoyed performing in his Christmas and Spring Musicals. He brought the President's Own Marine Band twice to the area. In retirement, he served on the Child Evangelism Fellowship State Board.

Dave delighted in his children and grandchildren and supported them in their athletic, musical or dance endeavors. He enjoyed pulling them behind the boat, playing the marble game or dominoes, and sipping root beer on the front porch. He enjoyed fishing with his buddies which was really more talking around the campfire than fishing. He enjoyed the music of Bill & Gloria Gaither and male quartets.

Survivors include his wife Mary Grade of Wausau; children Ann (Will) Nygaard of Wausau, daughters, Hannah and Naomi; Tim (Susie) Grade of Denver, CO, son, Russell; Dano (Krissy) Grade of Wausau, daughter, Brenna; brother-in-law Keith (Judy) Potter of Warrens, WI; two nephews and many cousins.

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 4:00 pm at Brainard Funeral Home, 522 Adams St. Tim Grade will officiate. Visitation will be held from 1:30 pm until the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Christ the Rock Bible Church, 4414 W. Stewart Ave, Wausau, WI 54401 or to the Hospice House, 530 N. 32nd Ave., Wausau, WI 54401.

My sympathies go out to Dave's wife, family and friends. I am a fellow WHS classmate of his and after reading the fine tributes paid to Dave it makes me wish I had known him when we were young.

His family can be proud not only of the fine musical legacy he leaves behind but more importantly the memory of what a kind, caring, loving man Dave was. Leif Salvesen WHS ‘59

Deepest condolences to Mary and Dave's extended family. Dave started trumpet when I started saxophone in 5th grade at Franklin School in Wausau. Frank Brenton was the visiting band teacher. We'd frequently stop at Dave's home on Chicago Ave. to practice. We both shared band experiences in Jr. and Sr. High. Dave joined the Tophatters in his senior year and the trumpet section rocked! A sad loss, indeed, but wonderful memories. I suspect he's already found a heavenly horn. Jim Radloff, 59 Tophatters leader, Eau Clire, WI.

Our sincere sympathy goes to you and your family. I attended Franklin school , junior and sr high with Dave. My mother-in-law taught with him at Schofield, Rothschild and Weston schools as "Toots" KLEIST worked in the library during that time. I shared the obituary and she still remembered Dave. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

Farewell Mr. Grade! Music class was always my favorite at Rothschild Elementary! I have fond memories of you pushing your piano from room to room and the excitement when you got your own music room! My children are practicing their own Christmas Program this year and learning, "Come on RIng those Bells" which you taught me so many years ago. Mr Grade put fun in music! Thank you for teaching me to enjoy music! The gift of music you taught me is now being passed on to my own children!
