Greg Schmadeke Obituary

Greg Edward Schmadeke, 70 of Waverly, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at the Waverly Health Center.

Greg was born on November 4, 1955, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Edward Fredrich William and Willa Joyce (Kielman) Schmadeke. He attended and graduated from Clarksville High School in 1974. After high school he worked outdoors mowing lawns and farming.

In the late 1980's, Greg moved out to Colorado where he worked. In February of 1991, he met his wife, Taunia Dasch. Greg and Taunia were united in marriage on August 30, 1991. After their marriage the couple moved to Waverly and eventually to Shell Rock.

Upon his return to Iowa, he continued mowing lawns in the area and retired from mowing in June of 2025. Greg was a huge Denver Broncos fan, enjoyed bird watching, thrifting, playing bingo and loved collecting empty boxes.

Greg is survived by his wife, Taunia Schmadeke of Waverly; his mother, Willa Joyce Schmadeke of Shell Rock; a son, John Shafer of Pennsylvania; a son, Daniel (Lee) Shafer of Greene; and a daughter, Marj (Shane) Spree of Shell Rock; ten grandchildren, Johnathon Shafer, Rebekah Shafer, Daniel (DJ) Shafer Jr., Michael Shafer, Melu Mae Shafer, Ann Marie Shafer, Levi Neiman, Reno Neiman, Marine Lance Corporal, Willum Spree and Alex Spree; three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Jenice (Lee) Engel of Clarksville and Tamara (Lance) Brown of Waverly; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Schmadeke; a granddaughter, Melu Shafer and two great nephews, Tyler and Isaac Brase.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the First United Church of Christ-Pleasant Valley. Burial of cremains will be held in the church cemetery at the time of the celebration of life.

Taunia n Greg´s family I´m so sorry on the loss of your dear Greg! He n my dad did a lot of things together! Greg was quite the character! Greg n Taunia went with our family to Dubuque. It was dad´s last trip away. We went to the LST Ship that my dad was on in WWII. We all got to go to the front of the line which was huge. They clapped for him all the way down n all the way back when we were done with the tour! Greg was very proud to be part of that. We had an awesome couple of days! RIP Greg! Sending much love to you Taunia n family!
