MaryAnn (Anderson) Wiertzema, 76, of Hubbard, formerly of Waverly, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2024, at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard.
MaryAnn was born in
Waverly, Iowa, on June 29th, 1948. She was the daughter of James and Bernice Anderson. She grew up in Waverly and attended school there, graduating high school in 1966. She went on to attend nursing school in Iowa City at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, becoming a registered nurse in August of 1969. While in nursing school in 1971, she met the love of her life, Paul Wiertzema. They married on August 5th, 1972, in Iowa City. The couple lived in Iowa until May of 1973 when they moved to Jefferson when Paul joined his father's carpentry business.
MaryAnn continued her nursing career working at the Jefferson Manor Care Facility as the Director of Nursing, and later as the Assistant Director of Nursing for the duration of the time she lived in Jefferson. The couple had two children, Nathan (Amber) Wiertzema and Nicole Wiertzema.
After the death of her husband in 2000, MaryAnn returned to her hometown of Waverly to be closer to family in late 2001. MaryAnn had four beloved grandchildren, Madison and Paige Wiertzema, and Kailey and Ethan P.W. Hjelmeland.
Motherhood and taking care of her family was her greatest joy. She took pride in being a mom and grandmother and nurturing her family. She always made sure everyone else's needs were met and made sure that they were healthy and happy. MaryAnn loved taking care of people and being a nurse and had one of the most caring spirits.
MaryAnn enjoyed sewing, quilting, crafting, and camping with her family at Spring Lake State Park. She was also known for her amazing resilience, her sparkle for life, and admired by many for her strength.
MaryAnn is preceded in death by her sister, Faye Ellen Anderson, husband, Paul Wiertzema, parents James and Bernice Anderson, brother-in-law, Mark Wiertzema and parents-in-law, Ollie and Ivadell Wiertzema. She is survived by her two children, Nathan (Amber) Wiertzema and Nicole Wiertzema, four grandchildren, five siblings, 15 nieces and nephews and many other extended relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly with Father Doug Wathier officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will be in the Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson, Iowa, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 13, where she will be laid to rest alongside her late husband, Paul Wiertzema.
